The Harlan Family's Discovery and Vision

While the Promontory winery officially opened its doors in 2017, the story of this unique location began decades earlier. H. William Harlan discovered this isolated territory, hidden from other vineyards in the region, while hiking in the early 1970s. In 2008, the family finally acquired the 840-acre (340-hectare) estate. In contrast to the family's more private "Harlan Estate" and "BOND" labels, Promontory is designed with openness in mind, blending industrial practicality with expansive spaces for visitors and events.

The Complex Art of Cabernet Sauvignon

Although the estate produces only a single Cabernet Sauvignon, the creation process is extraordinarily intricate. The 80 acres of vineyards are divided into numerous small plots. Due to significant variations in soil, elevation, and exposure, up to 70 different picking passes are made during harvest to ensure optimal fruit ripeness. This results in 30 or more individual component wines, which are aged for a year before being masterfully blended. The final blend then ages for several more years in large oak casks, ensuring it is only released to the market five years after the harvest.

Tasting and Food Pairing

Given its remarkable structure, depth, and aging potential, this wine demands equally high-quality culinary companions. It pairs magnificently with dry-aged beef, rich game dishes, or a selection of gourmet cheeses. To elevate your tasting experience, browse our curated collection of wine snacks.
