Airén is one of the most widely planted white grape varieties in the world, dominating the sunny plains of La Mancha in Spain. These berries produce extremely light, fresh, and lower-alcohol white wines. Delighting with notes of citrus fruits, green apples, and bananas, Airén wines are an ideal, unpretentious, and thirst-quenching choice for the everyday table.

The best Airén wine is the one made completely avoiding contact with oxygen and oak. Fermented in steel tanks at low temperatures, Airén wines retain their clarity and light, crisp character. Often in Spain, this variety is blended with Verdejo (Macabeo) or Sauvignon Blanc to give the blend even more aromatic complexity. It is a wine valued for its excellent price-quality ratio.
Due to its exceptional lightness and unpretentious taste, Airén does not require heavy food. It pairs fantastically with light vegetable salads, baked white fish (e.g., cod), seafood Tapas appetizers, and soft cheeses. Always serve this wine well-chilled (around 8 °C).
Airén vines are particularly resistant to extreme heat, drought, and diseases. On the plateaus of Central Spain (La Mancha), where summer temperatures often exceed 40 °C, Airén is one of the few varieties capable of successfully growing as bush vines and yielding abundant crops without any irrigation. The vast majority of this massive yield is still distilled for the famous Spanish brandy (Brandy de Jerez).
No, Airén wines are made to be drunk young. Their greatest advantage is spring-like freshness and mild fruitiness, so it is recommended to consume these wines within the first year after the harvest. Long aging in the bottle will cause the wine to lose its vibrancy and aroma.
