Alvarelhão is a unique and increasingly appreciated Portuguese red grape variety, best expressing its characteristics in the northern regions of the country. Unlike dark and powerful Portuguese wines, Alvarelhão berries produce exceptionally light, elegant, and refreshing drinks. This variety will charm those who appreciate subtle red berry aromas and low tannin levels.

Most of the best Alvarelhão wines come from the Vinho Verde or Dão regions. Grapes grown in the northern Vinho Verde region yield highly acidic, crisp, and light-colored wines smelling of raspberries and strawberries. In the Dão region, the warmth allows for a slightly rounder, yet still very elegant and floral style.
Thanks to its crisp acidity and low tannin content, Alvarelhão is one of those rare red wines that pair fabulously with fish. Confidently serve it with baked cod, tuna carpaccio, traditional Portuguese sardines, as well as light meat appetizers (tapas) or poultry.
Yes, they are the exact same grape. In Portugal, it is mostly called Alvarelhão, but in Spain's Galicia region (in the Rías Baixas appellation), this same variety is known as Brancelho (or Brancellao) and is used to provide freshness to local red blends.
To maximally reveal the freshness and crisp fruitiness of this variety, Alvarelhão wines are recommended to be served more chilled than standard reds—around 12–14 °C. If too warm, the wine may lose its elegant structure.
