Most commonly, you will encounter Black Muscat in the market as a dessert wine. Some producers stop the fermentation early, leaving a lot of natural grape sugar and a lower alcohol volume—such wine will be light and very floral. Another very popular style is fortified wine, where grape spirit is added during production. These wines feature a more viscous texture, a deeper body, and longevity, making them ideal for complex desserts.
Black Muscat is a perfect dessert wine whose floral and fruit aromas beautifully complement dark chocolate, truffle candies, and forest berry pies. It also pairs fantastically with intense, savory blue mold cheeses (e.g., Roquefort)—the contrast between sweetness and saltiness creates an unforgettable sensation on the palate.
Although the vast majority (and the very best) of Black Muscat wines are sweet or fortified, some winemakers (especially in Eastern Europe or the Eastern Mediterranean) experiment with creating dry rosés or light red wines. However, even in dry wines, the aromatic profile of the variety creates a very strong illusion of sweetness.
Although the name suggests the city of Hamburg (Muscat Hamburg), the variety was actually bred in England in the mid-19th century. It is a natural cross between the white Muscat of Alexandria and the German black Schiava Grossa (Trollinger) grapes. Initially used as a table grape for eating, it later gained popularity in global winemaking due to its unique aroma.
