Strictly speaking, "Muscat D'alsace" is an appellation name. Within the region, this wine is usually produced from two muscat varieties: the higher quality Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains (which provides elegance and crispness) and Muscat Ottonel (which brings more florality and softness). Most often, these varieties complement each other in a blend.
This is due to the so-called "grapey" phenomenon. Out of all the varieties used in winemaking, muscat grapes are perhaps the only ones from which the resulting wine naturally smells like... fresh grapes.
