It is a wonderful discovery for those seeking an easy-drinking yet characterful French wine.
Read moreBecause this variety is quite rare, it mostly comes from innovative winemakers in the Languedoc region who strive to create authentic wines reflecting the local terroir.
Although Portan is often used as an excellent color and fruit-enhancing addition in regional blends, 100% Portan wines are a true delicacy. Pure Portan wines delight with an uncomplicated texture and a vibrant profile of blackberries, cherries, and light spices. If you choose this wine, note that versions fermented in steel tanks retain the most primary freshness.
Thanks to its soft tannins and fruity character, Portan is very food-friendly. It is perfect for everyday dishes: oven-roasted chicken, pasta with meat sauces, burgers, mild cheese boards, and roasted vegetable stews.
This variety was bred in 1958 by French agronomist Paul Truel. His goal was to create a grape that would ripen early, be disease-resistant, and produce wine with good color and structure in the hot climate of Southern France. By crossing Grenache and Portugais Bleu, a successful hybrid was achieved, officially registered and cultivated in the following decades.
No, Portan wines are not meant for decades of cellaring. The greatest advantage of this variety is its fresh, crisp fruitiness and soft tannins. It is best to enjoy these wines while they are young—within 2–4 years of the vintage.
