How to Choose Roesler Wine

Due to its incredibly high concentration of pigments and tannins, Roesler is often used as a great addition to wine blends, but the best winemakers dare to bottle it on its own.

The Role of Oak Barrels

Pure Roesler wine can be very harsh, so when looking for the most harmonious variant, choose wines that have been aged in oak barrels. The oak effectively softens the naturally hard tannins of the variety and gives the drink a velvety texture and elegant aromas of smoke and chocolate, perfectly balancing the dark berry flavors.

Food Pairings for Roesler

A wine of such power and structure is built for meat dishes. It pairs fantastically with grilled beef, hearty game (wild boar, venison) stews with lingonberry jam, and strong-flavored aged cheeses. It is an ideal companion for winter evenings or rich dinners.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why is Roesler classified in the PIWI grape category?

The term PIWI (German: Pilzwiderstandsfähige) describes hybrid grape varieties resistant to fungal diseases. Roesler was bred in 1970 at the Klosterneuburg Institute in Austria to create a grape that would not require chemical spraying. It is a highly eco-friendly variety, allowing winemakers to easily apply sustainable and organic winemaking principles even in a cool climate.

What is the genetic origin of this variety?

Roesler is a complex hybrid. It was created by crossing "Zweigelt" with a breeding hybrid, which in turn was derived from crossing the French "Seyve-Villard" with the classic Austrian "Blaufränkisch" variety. From its noble parents, Roesler inherited excellent quality and spiciness, and from its hybrid ancestors—incredible resistance to winter frosts.
