Vaccarese (also known as Brun Argenté) is an extremely rare and exceptional red grape variety, best known as one of the 13 permitted varieties in the legendary French Châteauneuf-du-Pape blend. Although its plantings are very small, the wines produced from it feature exceptional elegance, aromas of flowers, smoke, and black pepper, along with soft tannins. In character, Vaccarese is often compared to the famous Syrah grape, but it has a slightly lighter body and less aggressive tannins. When drinking this wine, you can detect vibrant notes of dark berries (blackberries, blackcurrants), complemented by hints of leather, tobacco leaves, violets, and savory spices.
The elegant and spicy structure of Vaccarese pairs perfectly with roasted meat and game gastronomy. It will ideally complement roasted lamb with rosemary, slow-braised beef, grilled eggplants, and wild mushroom dishes.
In Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines (which are usually dominated by the high-alcohol and sweet-fruity Grenache), Vaccarese plays a harmonizing role. Although only a few percent may be added to the blend, this grape provides the wine with additional acidity, freshness, elegant tannins, and specific peppery spice aromas.
The name "Brun Argenté" (translating to "silvery brown") originates from the unique appearance of the grape's leaves. In late summer and autumn, the underside of the Vaccarese vine leaves takes on a distinctive, silvery-shining hue, which makes it easy to identify this variety in the vineyard among other Rhône Valley vines.
