Description

Frontonio El Jardín de Las Iguales Macabeo Valdejalón 2022 is one of the most ambitious and highly regarded wines of Fernando Mora MW’s project, revealing the potential of the old ‘Macabeo’ variety in the Aragonese mountain vineyards. The wine comes from the legendary Las Iguales vineyard in the Alpartir area, planted around 1890, at an altitude of 700 m above sea level, on slate and limestone soils. It is a very limited production wine, with just over a thousand bottles produced per year.

The aroma reveals notes of chamomile, white flowers, fennel, dried yellow flowers and beeswax. In the glass, nuances of chalk, wet stones, iodine, delicate seaweed and citrus fruits gradually emerge.

The wine is concentrated and at the same time extremely intense. The compact fruitiness of stone fruit and citrus is complemented by a chalky texture, a pronounced mineral structure and a salty mineral aftertaste. Despite its concentration, the wine retains exceptional energy, freshness and elegance. The aftertaste is long, deep and multi-layered, with subtle herbal and stone notes.

The Las Iguales vineyard is considered the jewel of Bodegas Frontonio. The vines, which are over 130 years old, grow on a north-east facing slope, where the slate and limestone soils, combined with the high altitude climate, allow for the preservation of exceptional acidity and minerality even in warm years. It is this terroir that gives the wine its unusual depth and longevity.

After approximately 40 hours of skin contact, the grapes are fermented in large 1000 l oak barrels with natural yeasts. The wine is aged in the same barrels for about a year, then transferred to used 500-liter oak barrels for additional aging before bottling.

Wine Advocate

The super pale and subtle white 2022 El Jardín de las Iguales Macabeo is a wine that feels a lot younger than it is, undeveloped and young. It comes from the same vineyard, a centenary plot, and with the same process as in previous years, fermented and matured in a 1,000-liter oak foudre. It has a complex nose with notes of dry yellow flowers and pollen and a round palate with texture, chalky minerality and a very long finish. It is complete and complex, just a more tender than the 2021, which was more chiseled. This is a wine that really grows in bottle. It was a success to hold it for one year before releasing it, and that's why the vintage in the market is one year older than the red. 1,305 bottles produced, a good year for quality and quantity. It was bottled in July 2024.

This opens with aromas of chamomile, white flowers, stones and a subtle hint of fennel. The palate is delineated, distinct and refined, with compact stone fruit running through its core and a saline thread that gives it energy. The finish is intense and vibrant, showing impressive length and contained ripeness that unfolds with elegance. This is the producer’s top single vineyard, planted on a northeastern-facing site in the vicinity of Alpartir. Drink now or hold.

About brand

"Bodegas Frontonio" is a project by Master of Wine (MW) Fernando Morra, born from the desire to reveal the uniqueness of Aragon region wines. "Bodegas Frontonio" is located in the Aragon region, which encompasses appellations such as Valdejalon, Campo de Borja, Calatayud, and Somontano. Many people have barely heard of them, but it is believed that the 'Garnacha' variety (known as 'Grenache' in France) originated from these areas. Therefore, it is not surprising that in these appellations we can find many old 'Garnacha' vines. Fernando Morra initiated the creation of the "Mondo Garnacha" winemakers' group, whose goal is to preserve and nurture old vines, expressing the best qualities of 'Garnacha' wines. In the Valdejalon IGP appellation, the oldest surviving vines were planted in the 1890s! Luis Gutierrez (Robert Parker's Wine Advocate reviewer), reviewing 'Garnacha' wines from Aragon, Navarra, and several other areas around the "Frontonio" winery, wrote simply and unequivocally: "This time, Frontonio wines are the ones that show the most significant progress compared to previous vintages. Each year the wine gets better."

Wine Style

"Bodegas Frontonio" wine is expressive, with exceptional balance, perfectly revealing the terroir of the vineyards.

  • White wine: Characterized by clear minerality, full texture, expressive, pure aroma, and perfectly integrated oak character.
  • Red wine: Aromatic, with polished tannins, juicy, and with a dominant red berry character.

Prestigious Vineyards

The winery owns prestigious vineyards, acquired since the 1890s. Among them stand out:

  • Valdejalon IGP – the oldest surviving vines.
  • Campo de Borja DO – an area famous for old 'Garnacha' vines.
  • Calatayud DO – a region where high-quality 'Garnacha' grapes are grown.
  • Somontano DO – a region where international and local grape varieties are combined.

They are complemented by lesser-known but characteristic vineyards of the Aragon region.

Aging and Consumption Period

"Bodegas Frontonio" wines are aged to highlight the best qualities of the vineyards. The wines are aged in both oak barrels and other vessels, depending on the wine style. For this reason, "Bodegas Frontonio" wines are flexible – they can be enjoyed both young and aged.
