Red dry
G.D. Vajra Barolo Ravera 2022 is an expression of one of the most famous crus of the Novello village, reflecting both the power of the Ravera vineyard and the Vajra family's elegant and extremely precise approach to 'Nebbiolo'. This wine is born in one of the coolest and most highly regarded Barolo crus, renowned for its structure, longevity and mineral precision. The 2022 harvest was warm and dry, but the Ravera highland terroir allowed it to preserve freshness and aromatic clarity.
The aroma reveals a very classic 'Nebbiolo' profile: dried roses, orange peel, cherries, white pepper, sandalwood and subtle notes of mountain herbs. The wine is aromatically very open and layered, but at the same time maintains the more rigid, chalky structure characteristic of Ravera. In the glass, you feel not the mass of fruit, but detail and energy.
The wine is medium-weight, concentrated. The tannins are firm, fine, long-lasting, and the bright acidity gives the wine a long aging potential. There are notes of cranberry, sour cherry, blood orange, cinnamon, pepper and a slightly salty mineral note. The aftertaste is long.
Ravera cru is located in the Novello area and is considered one of the great Barolo terroirs, particularly appreciated for its ability to combine power with elegance. The limestone marl soils and cooler microclimate here allow the ‘Nebbiolo’ to mature more slowly and maintain its aromatic sophistication even in warmer vintage years. This is why Ravera is often characterized by bright acidity, minerality and a long life perspective.
Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks with long maceration, and aging is carried out in large oak barrels, aiming not to overshadow the terroir, but to convey the Ravera identity.
Serve at 16-18°C with braised beef ribs, parmigiano cheese, truffle risotto, slow-roasted lamb shoulder, aged red meat steaks/stews.
Tea, hibiscus, orange rind, sandalwood and dried flowers. Really aromatic and absorbing. Medium-bodied, with a transparent, ethereal sense of fruit and a backbone of tannins that gives definition all the way to the end. Unique balance, from the famed vineyard in Novello. Better from 2029.
The Vajra family has farmed Bricco delle Viole, the highest cru in Comune di Barolo, since the 1880s. At the young age of fifteen, Aldo Vajra embraced the dream to revive his family legacy. Displaying a vision and commitment belying his young age he took over the estate in 1968, turning a new page.Aldo soon acquired the first organic certification of the region (1971), created private biotype selections (selezioni massali) of Nebbiolo and Dolcetto, pioneered the renaissance of Freisa, a noble yet forgotten local grape (1980) and the cultivation of Rhine Riesling in Piemonte (1985).Today, the Vajra family continues the vineyard research focusing on the influence of soil and climate change. The winery is trail-blazing the rediscovery of Chiaretto di Nebbiolo and the wines of the 17th century – long before Barolo was created - through two limited-production wines: “N.S. della Neve” (a champagne-method rosé nature) and “Claré JC”, a partial whole-cluster fermentation of pure Nebbiolo.High elevation vineyards are a unique factor to the Vajra wines, for their ability to express finesse and remarkable complexity over power
