Description

López de Heredia Viña Gravonia Crianza Blanco Rioja 2017 is a delicate white wine that embodies the traditions of the old Rioja, made exclusively from Viura grapes grown in the winery's own vineyards near the city of Haro. López de Heredia is one of the oldest and most authentic Rioja wineries, which has maintained the classic production style for more than a century: long aging in oak barrels, natural clarification of the wine and slow maturation in the bottle.

The wine was aged for about four years in American oak barrels, and then rested for several more years in the cellars. Today it is an expressive, complex white wine, characterized by the elegance of maturity and ancient charm.

In the glass, a golden color with subtle amber hues opens. The aroma - dried apples, roasted almonds, honey, wax, soft hints of oak and a mineral, slightly smoky background. The taste is dry, balanced, with fresh acidity, a creamy texture and a long, nutty aftertaste.

Serving recommendations

Serve at 10–12°C with grilled fish and seafood, marinated or seasoned white meat, pasta, risotto, rabbit, chicken, duck.

Wine Advocate

The nose of the 2017 Viña Gravonia Blanco is unmistakably López de Heredia, with those mushroom, white pepper and pollen aromas that remind you so much of the smell in their ancient caves. 2017 was the year of the big frost in April and the scarcity of rain that made it the earliest, scarcest and quickest harvest they have experienced in their recent history. The grapes for this wine were the first grapes picked, the 14th of September, from vines aged 93 years. It fermented in even older oak vats with indigenous yeasts ("We have never added yeasts to our wines," they answer when asked) and matured in used American oak barrels for four years (possibly more looking at the bottling date). Of course, this could qualify as a Gran Reserva, but they keep it at Crianza (to have a range), and it's sold at a bargain price for its quality and age. It's characterful and nuanced, with some hints of development (diesel) and a lightish palate with pungent flavors and great harmony. It has the usual parameters: 12.5% alcohol, a pH of three and seven grams of acidity. 20,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2023.

About brand

López de Heredia – one of the oldest and most prestigious wineries in Spain, founded in 1880 by Don Rafael López de Heredia. For more than 140 years, this family estate has become a true symbol of Rioja, renowned for its unwavering commitment to traditional winemaking. Unlike many others, the estate has always worked exclusively with its own vineyards, ensuring full quality control and authentic terroir expression.

Wine Style

López de Heredia wines are celebrated for their depth, complexity, and remarkable longevity.

  • Red wines – made primarily from ‘Tempranillo’, ‘Garnacha’, ‘Graciano’, and ‘Mazuelo’. They display aromas of mature fruit, spices, and delicate herbal notes, with silky tannins and a long, refined finish.
  • White wines (from ‘Viura’ and ‘Malvasía’) – rare in Rioja, known for their elegance, oxidative nuances, and accents of nuts, honey, and dried fruit.

These wines stand as proof that a truly traditional style can remain timeless and relevant today.

Authentic Winemaking Methods

The estate follows methods established in the 19th century. Fermentation takes place in 72 large oak vats, some of which have been in use since the winery’s founding. Wines are then aged for extended periods in handmade American oak barrels, providing finesse, depth, and distinctive structure. All barrels are crafted in the winery’s own cooperage, preserving independence and authenticity.

Prestigious Vineyards

López de Heredia owns 170 hectares of vineyards in Rioja Alta. Among them, the renowned Viña Tondonia (founded in 1913) is considered one of the most iconic sites in all of Rioja. Other notable vineyards include Viña Bosconia, Viña Cubillo, and Viña Gravonia, each contributing unique character and enhancing the winery’s reputation for excellence.

Aging and Drinking Window

One of the hallmarks of López de Heredia is its extraordinary aging process. Wines are kept in oak barrels far longer than usual – often 6 to 10 years – and once bottled, they may continue to mature in the cellars for several more decades. While approachable in their youth, these wines reveal their true greatness with age – a timeless expression of Rioja that never goes out of style.
