Lucien Boillot Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Angles 2023

95,00

Description

A classic Volnay Premier Cru from Domaine Lucien Boillot et Fils – one of Burgundy’s traditional estates, where the experience and heritage of both Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits come together. “Clos des Angles” is one of the domaine’s most important parcels – a plot of old vines inherited from previous generations.

The nose reveals red cherries, redcurrants, raspberries, violets, rose petals, and subtle notes of spice and earth. This is not an intensely extracted Pinot Noir; its aromatic profile is defined by freshness, floral character, and structure.

On the palate, the wine shows the classic Volnay profile: medium-bodied, with vibrant acidity and delicate yet firm tannins providing a solid backbone. The strength of “Clos des Angles” lies in its balance between elegance and concentration.

The vineyard is located below the village of Volnay, on a southeast-facing slope with clay and limestone soils mixed with small stones that provide excellent drainage. These conditions are typical of the classic Volnay style – an elegant, aromatic Pinot Noir where precision and texture are more important than power.

Domaine Lucien Boillot follows a traditional Burgundian approach: native yeasts are used, the vineyards are farmed traditionally, and the wine is aged in oak barrels, with no more than around 30% new oak. The wine is matured for 16–18 months.

Serving recommendations

Recommended serving temperature: 15–16 °C; pairs perfectly with duck breast, rabbit, and dishes featuring wild mushrooms.

About brand

A family estate where the winemaking traditions of Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits come together. Today, the domaine is managed by Pierre Boillot, who took over the estate named after his father Lucien and continues to develop a wine style based on the classical Burgundian approach. Pierre Boillot comes from a family of winemakers with roots in Volnay, and the vineyards under his care include old vines located in both the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits regions.

Domaine Lucien Boillot owns vineyards in several prestigious Burgundy appellations, including Volnay, Pommard, Gevrey-Chambertin, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Puligny-Montrachet and other areas of Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits. The estate’s strength lies in its ability to express the character of different terroirs: from the elegant and aromatic style of Volnay wines to the more structured interpretations of Pommard and Gevrey-Chambertin. Among the most important parcels are Volnay “Les Angles”, Pommard “Croix Noires”, and Gevrey-Chambertin “Les Cherbaudes” and “Les Corbeaux”, located close to renowned Grand Cru vineyards.

The vineyards are managed according to lutte raisonnée principles, a sustainable approach focused on maintaining the natural balance of the soil and vines. Pierre Boillot places particular emphasis on the care of old vines, soil health, and preserving the individual character of each parcel.

Winemaking follows traditional Burgundian methods. Red wines are generally produced from grapes that are either partially or completely destemmed, with a cold maceration period before fermentation, which takes place using natural yeasts. The wines are aged in French oak barrels for around 16–18 months, with a limited proportion of new oak to preserve fruit purity and terroir expression. The wines are often bottled with minimal filtration or without filtration.

Today, Domaine Lucien Boillot et Fils is recognised for its restrained, classical Burgundy style, where the focus lies on the character of the place, structural balance, and the ability of ‘Pinot Noir’ and ‘Chardonnay’ to express the identity of individual vineyards.
