Description

Luigi Baudana Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba 2022 is a classic Serralunga d'Alba Barolo, created from several different plots of this famous commune. The name Luigi Baudana is associated in the Barolo world with the authentic character of Serralunga - structure, longevity and exceptional terroir precision. Since 2009. the farm belongs to the Aldo Vaira family, but the wine continues to be made from the fruit of the historic Baudana and Cerretta vineyards, maintaining the original style of the farm.
The aroma opens with layered notes of cherries, wild raspberries, dried roses, orange peel and sweet spices. In the glass, nuances of iron ore, forest floor, tobacco and liquorice gradually reveal themselves - aromas characteristic of the best Serralunga d'Alba Nebbiolo.

The wine is concentrated. Firm, ripe tannins provide structure, while lively acidity maintains energy and elegance. The fruitiness of red and dark berries is combined with minerality, dried herbs and spices. The aftertaste is long, precise and characteristic, revealing the stricter, longer-lasting Barolo style characteristic of the Serralunga area.

The grapes are grown in the hills of Serralunga d'Alba, where calcareous clay soils and higher exposures give the Nebbiolo variety a unique structure and aromatic depth.

Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, and the wine is then aged for a long time in large oak barrels.

2022 was an extremely hot and dry year in the Barolo region, but Serralunga d'Alba was one of the most successful communes. Critics note that the best 2022 Serralunga Barolo maintained freshness, balance and excellent concentration despite the difficult climatic conditions.

James Suckling

An incisive, compelling nose, showing wild berries, a touch of smoke and an equally vivid eucalyptus note. The deep palate has pronounced, integrated acidity and juicy yet delicate, transparent fruit so typical of the vintage. Balanced, focused tannins combine with freshness, adding further dimension. This needs a couple of years to come together. From vines planted in 1960. Better in 2028.

About brand

The Vajra family has farmed Bricco delle Viole, the highest cru in Comune di Barolo, since the 1880s. At the young age of fifteen, Aldo Vajra embraced the dream to revive his family legacy. Displaying a vision and commitment belying his young age he took over the estate in 1968, turning a new page.Aldo soon acquired the first organic certification of the region (1971), created private biotype selections (selezioni massali) of Nebbiolo and Dolcetto, pioneered the renaissance of Freisa, a noble yet forgotten local grape (1980) and the cultivation of Rhine Riesling in Piemonte (1985).Today, the Vajra family continues the vineyard research focusing on the influence of soil and climate change. The winery is trail-blazing the rediscovery of Chiaretto di Nebbiolo and the wines of the 17th century – long before Barolo was created - through two limited-production wines: “N.S. della Neve” (a champagne-method rosé nature) and “Claré JC”, a partial whole-cluster fermentation of pure Nebbiolo.High elevation vineyards are a unique factor to the Vajra wines, for their ability to express finesse and remarkable complexity over power
