Red dry
One of the most striking names in Saint-Julien, holding 2ème Grand Cru Classé status. It presents itself as a highly concentrated yet precisely balanced wine — rich and powerful, while remaining remarkably pure and elegant. This is Saint-Julien where strength never overwhelms structure.
The nose is deep and multi-layered. Blackcurrants, blackberries, dark cherries and plums appear first, followed by notes of cedar, graphite, tobacco leaf and a subtle smoky nuance. With time in the glass, layers of black pepper, cocoa, balsamic herbs and gentle earthiness emerge, giving the bouquet a sense of refined power.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet perfectly aligned with Saint-Julien’s hallmark equilibrium. The tannins are dense, silky and seamlessly integrated, while the lively acidity supports the fruit concentration and brings structural precision. Flavours of ripe dark berries, graphite, cedar and subtle spice dominate, leading to a long, dry, mineral finish with elegant hints of tobacco and saline freshness.
The vineyards of Château Léoville Poyferré lie on gravel terraces over limestone in Saint-Julien, allowing Cabernet Sauvignon to root deeply and maintain balance, aromatic clarity and longevity even in warm vintages. This terroir gives the wine its classic Médoc backbone and refined structure.
The harvest is carried out by hand, with meticulous grape selection. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, followed by ageing for approximately 18–20 months in French oak barrels, enhancing structure while preserving purity and finesse.
Serve at 16–18 °C; pairs well with roast lamb with rosemary, matured beef (ribeye) with pepper sauce, and slow-cooked venison with root vegetables.
A mind-blowing Leoville Poyferre, probably one of the best for a long time. Huge depth and structure, showing a deep matrix of fruit full of fresh blackberries and a dash of ink and lead pencil. Such verticality on the full-bodied palate with beautiful balance and a clear finish that goes on and on for more than a minute. Great potential ahead. This was tasted at the UCGB tasting and was one of the best wines of the day. Drink after 2028. It should improve in the next 10 to 15 years.
Léoville is located in Saint-Julien, 45 km north-west of Bordeaux, in the heart of the Médoc region. With origins dating back to 1638; Léoville was the largest vineyard in the Médoc region at the time of the French Revolution. Léoville Poyferré springs from various divisions and successions in 1840. The outstanding quality of Léoville Poyferré wines gained early recognition when it was ranked 2nd Growth in the 1855 classification. Château Léoville Poyferré was acquired in 1920 by the Cuvelier family, wine merchants in Lille since 1804. The various divisions throughout the history of the estate have split the vineyard of Léoville Poyferré into five large areas. They include all the main types of gravelly soil present in Saint Julien: Mindel II gravel along the river banks and Mindel I type on the far end. This diversity contributes to the amplitude and complexity of the Léoville Poyferré wines. The terroir of Léoville Poyferré has been planted with vineyards producing fine wines for three centuries. Léoville Poyferré boasts a permanent observation system of the underground water tables, showing the excellent drainage conditions of the whole vineyard. This system also establishes an estimated minima for root depth. To avoid accumulation of water on the surface, we regularly decompact the soil of our plots.
