Description

Château Picque Caillou La Réserve Rouge Pessac-Léognan AOC 2021 is a classic red Bordeaux wine that reflects the elegance, structure, and refined character of the Pessac-Léognan appellation.

The wine offers a rich yet well-balanced aromatic profile. On the nose, notes of blackcurrants, ripe cherries, and blackberries unfold first, followed by subtle hints of cedar, tobacco, and graphite.

On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, harmonious, and elegant. The tannins are smooth yet firm, providing structure and aging potential. Fresh, well-integrated acidity maintains balance, while the fruit expression is complemented by delicate earthy and spicy nuances. The finish is long, clean, and refined, leaving a classic Pessac-Léognan impression.

The wine is made from traditional regional varieties — Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot — which complement each other perfectly:

  • Cabernet Sauvignon contributes structure and longevity,

  • Merlot adds softness and ripe fruit character.

After fermentation, the wine is aged in French oak barrels, which enhance it with subtle spice notes, reinforce overall harmony, and preserve the wine’s natural fruit expression.

Serving recommendations

Serve at 16-18 °C with dried beef/beef tenderloin, game stew with wild mushrooms, or mature cheeses.

About brand

Château Picque Caillou is a Bordeaux wine estate whose history and present day meet in a truly unexpected setting. It is the only still-active vineyard located within the city of Bordeaux itself, having survived urban expansion, the passage of time, and a constantly changing landscape.

The name “Picque Caillou” comes from the estate’s distinctive gravelly, stony soil, long regarded as one of the most suitable terroirs for growing high-quality grapes. These stones absorb heat during the day and slowly release it at night, allowing the grapes to ripen evenly while preserving aromatic depth and balance. This unique soil is one of the key reasons why the wines of Château Picque Caillou are known for their elegance, structure, and aging potential.

Although the estate’s roots go back several centuries, its modern identity was shaped in the late 20th century when it was taken over by the Calvet family. Their vision was to preserve the character of the place while crafting wines that express the classic Pessac-Léognan style, refined through a clean, precise, and contemporary approach to winemaking.

Great attention is paid to handwork in the vineyard, strict yield control, and the individual character of each parcel. Despite being surrounded by the city, the vineyard benefits from a unique microclimate that allows the grapes to reach optimal ripeness. This results in wines of harmony, balance, and natural depth.

Château Picque Caillou wines are defined by:

  • expressive black fruit aromas,
  • subtle spice notes,
  • elegant, well-structured tannins,
  • and a distinct mineral character typical of the Pessac-Léognan appellation.

Today, Château Picque Caillou is regarded as one of the most fascinating “urban vineyards” in the world — a rare estate that preserves Bordeaux tradition while proving that authentic, terroir-driven wine can still be created in the heart of a modern city.
