Red dry
G.D. Vajra Barbera d'Alba Superiore DOC 2022 is an exceptional, complex red wine born in the legendary vineyards of Piedmont, nurtured by the G.D. Vajra family winery. Made from 100% Barbera grapes grown in organic vineyards, this wine combines the classic Italian Barbera character with modern elegance.
The wine has a rich ruby color and a complex aroma: black cherries, plums, raspberries, delicate herbs, sweet spices, chocolate and a light smoke accent. In the mouth - full, balanced, with bright yet elegant acidity, soft tannins, a long aftertaste.
The wine is aged for 18-24 months in large oak barrels to maintain the fruitiness and natural character of the grapes. The grapes are hand-picked from two prestigious areas – Bricco delle Viole (Barolo) and Bricco Bertone (Sinio) – which give the wine depth and an exceptional reflection of the terroir.
Serve at 16-18°C. Ideal with duck, beef steaks, roasted vegetables, truffle paste, aged cheeses or even gourmet burgers.
This wine has an exuberant nose of crushed blueberries, spices, cedar and a subtle hint of tile. On the palate it’s full-bodied with compact, precise tannins. There is a balanced and lovely interplay between the vibrant fruit, focused tannins and lively acidity. Sensibly made Barbera. Drink now.
Offering a level of aromatic clarity and elegance that is not always easy for this grape, the G.D. Vajra 2022 Barbera d'Alba Superiore Viola delle Viole has beautiful aromas of earthy iris, gentle oak spice, toasted allspice and a very ripe or soft quality of fruit. It all balances out smoothly to the senses. The tannins are tucked softly within that texture to good effect, giving support but no harshness. This is a well-made Superiore with both intensity and balance.
The Vajra family has farmed Bricco delle Viole, the highest cru in Comune di Barolo, since the 1880s. At the young age of fifteen, Aldo Vajra embraced the dream to revive his family legacy. Displaying a vision and commitment belying his young age he took over the estate in 1968, turning a new page.Aldo soon acquired the first organic certification of the region (1971), created private biotype selections (selezioni massali) of Nebbiolo and Dolcetto, pioneered the renaissance of Freisa, a noble yet forgotten local grape (1980) and the cultivation of Rhine Riesling in Piemonte (1985).Today, the Vajra family continues the vineyard research focusing on the influence of soil and climate change. The winery is trail-blazing the rediscovery of Chiaretto di Nebbiolo and the wines of the 17th century – long before Barolo was created - through two limited-production wines: “N.S. della Neve” (a champagne-method rosé nature) and “Claré JC”, a partial whole-cluster fermentation of pure Nebbiolo.High elevation vineyards are a unique factor to the Vajra wines, for their ability to express finesse and remarkable complexity over power
