Barolo DOCG

1–21 of 21

One of the most renowned and respected names in Italian wine, often called “the king of wines and the wine of kings.”
This prestigious red wine is produced in Piedmont, northern Italy, in the southwestern part of the Langhe hills, surrounding the villages of Barolo, La Morra, Monforte d’Alba, Serralunga d’Alba, and Castiglione Falletto.

The only permitted grape variety is ‘Nebbiolo’, one of Italy’s noblest grapes, celebrated for its high acidity, firm tannins, and exceptional aging potential. It is in Barolo that Nebbiolo reveals its full character — a perfect harmony of elegance, power, and complexity.

The climate is continental, with cool autumns and long, sunny summers. The east- and south-facing slopes ensure even ripening, while the region’s characteristic mists (from “nebbia” – fog) help maintain aromatic freshness and structure.

The soils of Barolo are diverse but dominated by two main types: Tortonian marl, rich in limestone and clay, producing softer, more elegant wines (typically in La Morra and Barolo), and Helvetian sandy clay, found in Serralunga and Monforte, yielding firmer and more structured wines.

The aroma of Barolo unfolds with notes of rose petals, violets, dried cherries, tobacco, leather, truffles, and spices, which with age evolve into hints of forest floor, resin, and hawthorn.

On the palate, Barolo is intense, concentrated, yet always elegant. The tannins are firm but refined, the acidity vibrant, and the finish long, with a mineral and slightly smoky aftertaste. The best examples can age gracefully for 20 years or more.

By regulation, Barolo must be aged at least 38 months, including 18 months in oak barrels, while Riserva versions require a minimum of 62 months. This long maturation gives the wine its remarkable structure, depth, and aromatic harmony.

Barolo DOCG stands today as one of the benchmarks of fine red wine worldwide — a symbol not only of Piedmont but of Italian viticultural excellence, uniting tradition, precision, and the grandeur of nature in every glass.
