Clos Cibonne Cotes de Provence Cru Classe Rose Cuvee Speciale des Vignettes BIO 2023

Description

A profound and age-worthy rosé, Clos Cibonne Cuvée Spéciale des Vignettes represents the pinnacle of this historic estate’s production and a benchmark for serious, cellar-worthy rosé from Provence.

The wine reveals aromas of sun-dried citrus, wild herbs, dried apricots, sea breeze, and hints of spice. On the palate, it is textured and complex, with layers of savory minerality, delicate oxidative notes, and an unmistakable Mediterranean salinity. The finish is long, elegant, and structured, offering immense gastronomic potential and the ability to age for 10 years or more.

Clos Cibonne is one of only 18 estates classified as Cru Classé in Provence. Nestled between the Maures mountains and the Mediterranean Sea, the estate enjoys ideal conditions: clay-limestone soils, excellent ventilation, and maritime influences that maintain freshness in the fruit. The Tibouren grape, rarely found outside of Clos Cibonne, is at the heart of the estate’s identity and offers a distinct aromatic and textural profile.

Sourced from the oldest Tibouren vines on the estate — over 60 years old — this cuvée is both rare and deeply expressive, crafted in very limited quantities.

Following manual early morning harvest, grapes are destemmed and gently pressed. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks with native yeasts, followed by 12 months of aging sous-voile — under a delicate veil of yeast — in century-old oak foudres.

Serving recommendations

Serve at 10–12 °C. This rosé pairs beautifully with tuna tartare with sesame oil, roast duck with dried fruits, or aged Comté cheese.

About brand

Clos Cibonne is a historic Côtes de Provence Cru Classé estate located in Le Pradet, near Toulon. The domaine is distinguished by its commitment to preserving the rare Provençal grape variety Tibouren, which has become the cornerstone of its identity. Unlike most contemporary Provence rosé producers, Clos Cibonne focuses on structured, age-worthy rosé wines where terroir, texture, and gastronomic versatility are as important as freshness.

History and Winemaking Philosophy

The estate's history dates back to the 18th century and is closely linked to Jean-Baptiste de Cibon, a captain in the French Royal Navy. Following the French Revolution, the property came into the hands of the Roux family, who played a key role in preserving and promoting the Tibouren grape. In the early 20th century, André Roux made the strategic decision to focus on this historic Provençal variety, a commitment that contributed to the estate being awarded Cru Classé status in 1955.

Today, Clos Cibonne continues the family's legacy while farming its vineyards according to organic principles. Particular attention is given to soil health, the preservation of old vines, and expressing the authentic character of the estate's terroir.

The Clos Cibonne Style

The hallmark of the estate is Tibouren, a rare Provençal grape variety that gives the wines their distinctive aromatic profile and structural depth.

Clos Cibonne rosés are aged in large oak foudres, while some cuvées spend an extended period under a natural yeast veil (voile). This traditional method adds texture, subtle oxidative complexity, and exceptional ageing potential.

Main wine styles:

  • Tibouren Rosé – Rosé wines of refined structure, combining red berry fruit, dried herbs, spice, mineral notes, and delicate oxidative nuances.
  • Cuvée des Vignettes, Cuvée Caroline, Cuvée Olivier – Limited-production cuvées made from older vines, offering greater concentration, texture, and ageing potential.

Vineyards and Terroir

The Clos Cibonne vineyards are located near the Mediterranean Sea on the slopes of the Colle Noire massif. The terroir is defined by a combination of clay, limestone, schist, and other geological formations, while the maritime climate helps preserve freshness, natural acidity, and aromatic precision.

Old Tibouren vines provide additional concentration and complexity, making this variety the defining feature that distinguishes Clos Cibonne from other Provence producers.

Ageing Potential

Clos Cibonne wines are crafted for evolution rather than immediate consumption. Thanks to ageing in large foudres and the natural structure provided by Tibouren, the finest cuvées can develop for more than a decade, gradually revealing notes of nuts, dried fruit, spice, and a richer, creamier texture.
