One of the oldest producers in the Moulin-à-Vent appellation, the Prieur family estate was founded in 1850. This prestigious family today not only owns the renowned “Jacques Prieur” winery in Burgundy but also “Château Rouget” in Pomerol and is involved in “Récoltant-Manipulant” operations in Champagne. The terroir of Moulin-à-Vent is truly unique – dominated by pink granite soils with manganese deposits, a feature not found in the surrounding famous appellations. These manganese-rich soils result in lower yields and greater flavor concentration, giving the wines their distinctive character.
Wine Style
Prieur family Moulin-à-Vent wines are celebrated for their elegance, structure, and longevity. They are refined, full-bodied wines that perfectly express the potential of the ‘Gamay’ grape in this exceptional terroir.
• Red wine – made from carefully selected ‘Gamay’ grapes. Aromas reveal notes of blackberries, cherries, violets, and subtle spices. The palate is rich, with a firm yet polished tannin structure and a long, persistent finish.
• Special cuvées – limited-edition wines from old vines, offering greater concentration and excellent aging potential.
Prestigious Vineyards
The estate owns some of the most notable vineyards in the Moulin-à-Vent appellation, each contributing uniquely to the final wine profile:
• Pink granite plots – provide a mineral-driven character and firm structure.
• Old ‘Gamay’ vines – ensure depth of flavor and aromatic complexity.
Aging and Drinking Window
The wines are vinified using traditional methods with indigenous yeasts and aged in both oak barrels and larger wooden vats to preserve fruit freshness and terroir authenticity. Moulin-à-Vent wines from the Prieur family can be enjoyed young for their vibrant fruit, yet the finest examples age beautifully for 10–15 years, gaining even more elegance and complexity over time.
