Description

Chiara Boschis – E. Pira & Figli Cannubi Barolo DOCG 2021 is a single-vineyard, 100% ‘Nebbiolo’ wine from the famous Cannubi cru in the commune of Barolo. It is a wine that combines the refinement and inner strength characteristic of Cannubi: the farm’s technical sheet describes it as a harmonious, structured and long, elegant Barolo with a long aftertaste, while Chiara Boschis herself bases her style on balance, aromatic expression and precisely controlled texture. The wine is made from organically certified grapes.

In aroma, this Barolo opens very gracefully and multi-layered. Alongside the classic cherry and plum fruitiness, there are notes of rose, lavender, mint, eucalyptus, blood orange and subtle spices. Some descriptions also mention the extremely pure character of the cherry pit and the raised, vertical aromatic line, which makes the wine seem not heavy, but transparent and lively.

On the palate, the wine has a silky texture, precise structure and very harmonious. The tannins are fine, creamy but firm, the acidity maintains freshness, and the aftertaste is long, salty-mineral and very elegant. In the descriptions of the 2021 vintage, this Cannubi is emphasized as a particularly complete, balanced and “full” Barolo, in which power is not separated from delicacy.

The character of this wine is shaped by Cannubi itself – one of the most famous growing areas in all of Barolo: calcareous Sant’Agata marl soils with a part of sand, an altitude of about 300 m and a southern exposure; additional sources emphasize that it is the sandier and calcareous nature of Cannubi that helps create a wine in which elegance is maintained along with depth, structure and minerality.

The winery follows a clear, precise scheme: the grapes are harvested in mid-October, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with daily immersions and racking, and then the wine is aged for 24 months in lightly toasted French oak barrels and about a year in the bottle. This aging gives the wine texture and longevity, but does not overshadow the elegance of Cannubi’s origins.

The 2021 Cannubi was made with great precision in the winery: the grapes are completely separated from the stems, and the wine is aged for 24 months in used, lightly toasted 2000 l French oak barrels, the wine is unfiltered. This aging allows the voice of Cannubi’s origins to remain in the foreground, without the oak becoming dominant.

About brand

"Pira" is an old winemaking family, mentioned in parish registers since the 17th century. Gigi Pira, a legendary representative of the old school of production, created his wines by harvesting grapes from his plots in the Cannubi, San Lorenzo, and Via Nuova vineyards. However, Pira's attachment to tradition did not end there: he was indeed the last surviving winemaker of the old style. Since 1980, continuity has been ensured by Chiara Boschis and her parents Franco and Ida, who already share a deep friendship and mutual respect with Pira and represent the historic "Barolo" producer family. Chiara is one of the first female winemakers in Barolo. Her style differs from the traditional one. The wines are bright, fruity, rich in aromas, and have friendlier tannins. The grapes are grown according to an ecological philosophy, and all processes are carried out by hand.

Wine Style

"Pira" wines are characterized by a distinctive character, blending tradition and modernity. They are elegant, harmonious wines that reflect the uniqueness of the "Barolo" terroir.

  • Red wine: aromatic, with smooth tannins, rich in red fruit notes, elegant, and long-lasting.
  • White wine: clean, fresh, mineral, with subtle floral and fruit aromas.

Prestigious Vineyards

"Pira" owns prestigious vineyards located in the most famous areas of the "Barolo" region:

  • Cannubi: one of the most famous and prestigious "Barolo" vineyards, renowned for its elegant and complex wines.
  • San Lorenzo: a vineyard where powerful and structured "Barolo" wines are born.
  • Via Nuova: a vineyard where grapes are grown to produce aromatic and fruity wines.

These famous vineyards are complemented by other, lesser-known but equally valuable plots where 'Nebbiolo' grapes are grown.

Aging and Drinking Period

"Pira" wines have an excellent balance between youthfulness and aging potential. Thanks to the soft tannins and bright acidity, these wines can be enjoyed in their youth, but they also age and develop beautifully over time. "Barolo" wines are particularly famous for their longevity.
