Description

Clos du Lican 2021 is an exceptional single-vineyard Syrah from the Apalta Valley, which earned a perfect 100 points from renowned wine critic James Suckling, making it one of Chile's highest-rated wines. This is a rich, refined, and terroir-driven wine, reflecting the distinctiveness of Apalta's high-altitude slopes.

In the glass, it reveals a deep ruby color with violet hues. The aroma is expressive and multi-layered: lavender, sage, blackcurrant, blackberry, along with soft smoky and herbal notes, create a deep and harmonious aromatic palette. The palate is rich yet elegant, with silky tannins, excellent structure, and a long, spice-driven finish.

The Syrah grapes are cultivated on granite slopes at elevations of 185–430 meters, which helped maintain excellent acidity even in the cooler 2021 vintage. Aged in oak, the wine preserves a natural balance between fruit power and refined accents.

This is a wine for those seeking a top-tier Syrahdeep yet modern, perfectly suited for aging or a celebratory dinner.

Serving recommendations

Serve at 16-18 °C. Pairs well with lamb roasts, game stews with wild mushrooms, duck with plum sauce or aged cheese.

James Suckling

I’ve never before smelled a wine like this. The captivating aromas are amazing, with lavender, sage, dried potpourri, blackberries, tar, pepper and black licorice. Full-bodied with super tannins that fan out and caress the palate. It’s ethereal and endless. A pure syrah from the owners of Clos Apalta, from unique mountain vineyards. Just over 6,000 bottles made. Try to give this four or five years of bottle age. Best after 2028.

About brand

It is rare for a place to be able to captivate a person so immediately, with so much force. It was 1994. After months of research, Alexandra Marnier Lapostolle and her husband, Cyril de Bournet, discovered the Apalta Valley. A fine, golden light embraced the vineyard whilst hundred-year old-vines stood, intertwining majestically. Harmony had taken residence here. Alexandra Marnier Lapostolle knew that Clos Apalta could bring about the joyful encapsulation of this breathtaking landscape. As the terroir is a living matter, Clos Apalta has opened up to organics in the gentlest possible way. From then on, helping to preserve the natural and pure feel of the different terroirs became an absolute priority. The vineyard receives the best care possible.
