Compagnia di Volpaia Castelprile Rosso Riserva Maremma Toscana DOC 2019 is a more serious style Maremma red from the Tuscan coast, based on organic grapes. The wine is mainly formed by ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’, supplemented by ‘Sangiovese’ and a small part of ‘Merlot’. It is a wine in which the warmth of the coast is combined with a neat structure, and the character of the reserve is created not by heaviness, but by a denser texture, darker fruit and a clear role of maturation.

The aroma is most clearly felt by notes of plum, black cherry and blackberry jam, accompanied by soft sweet spices and balsamic tones. The wine is juicy, powerful and has a firm tannic structure.

The character of this wine is formed by the Prile vineyards in the Maremma Toscana area, near Grosseto. The vines grow at an altitude of 40-60 m, with a south-southeast exposure, and the soil is mainly sand (80%), with a smaller proportion of clay (15%) and silt (5%) and pebbles. The Castelprile vineyards are located about 7 km from the coast, on the shores of the ancient Prelius Lake.

The wine was aged for 18 months in French oak barrels. The 2019 season is described as a rather cool and rainy spring, followed by a hot summer with a few saving rains, and ripening took place a little later than usual; the harvest was carried out between 6 and 18 September. All this allowed for the formation of a concentrated but not overripe, structurally solid expression of the riserva style.

Serving recommendations

"Castello di Volpaia" is undoubtedly considered a super classic Italian wine producer, and almost all of their red wines are made from Tuscany's primary grape variety, ‘Sangiovese’.

Wine Style

"Castello di Volpaia" wines are characterized by elegance, structure, and excellent acid balance, reflecting the uniqueness of the Chianti Classico region and especially the Volpaia terroir. Red wines, made from ‘Sangiovese’ grapes, dominate.

  • Red wines, based on ‘Sangiovese’, offer bright aromas of cherries and plums, elegant herbal and earthy notes, firm but smooth tannins, and a long, pleasant finish. Longer aging in barrels adds complexity and spice notes.
  • The winery also produces a limited quantity of white wines and Vin Santo, but the red Chianti Classico wines are their hallmark.
