This is an exceptional choice for those looking to immerse themselves in the historic mezcal traditions of the Oaxaca region. "Del Maguey San Luis del Rio Azul" is a unique spirit crafted at an altitude of approximately 8,000 feet, using blue agave ("Azul") typically reserved for tequila, roasted for 3 to 8 days and fermented for up to 14 days.
Aroma: spicy, fruity, and smoky, revealing notes of an old mango grove, lime, cocoa, and minerals.
Taste in the mouth: exceptionally creamy, featuring citrus and dried tropical fruits, herbs, wet stones, and white pepper, leaving a long, sweet finish.
Serving recommendations and pairing: best enjoyed neat in a wide glass (such as a copita), pairs wonderfully with dark chocolate, citrus fruits, or spicy Mexican cuisine.
Del Maguey is a legendary mezcal brand founded in 1995 by American artist Ron Cooper, who was captivated by traditional village-made mezcal while travelling through the Oaxaca region. Del Maguey was the first to introduce the Single Village concept to the world: each spirit is created together with a specific Zapotec or Mixtec family in a single village of Oaxaca or Puebla, so every bottle reflects the unique character of its place of origin. Del Maguey is widely credited with creating the modern mezcal category worldwide.
The mezcal is made following centuries-old traditions: agave hearts are roasted in earthen pits, crushed with a volcanic stone wheel (tahona), fermented in wooden vats and double distilled. The bottles are adorned with labels based on drawings by artist Ken Price, which have become the brand's signature. Since 2017 Del Maguey has been part of the Pernod Ricard group, yet production remains in the hands of small family palenques. Today the range includes around 20 different mezcals from more than 10 villages and 12 agave varieties.
