Red dry
Experience the legendary Domaine Ponsot Cuvée Vieilles Vignes Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 2022, the pinnacle of the Ponsot cellar and a wine built for the ages. This emblematic Grand Cru offers extraordinary depth, power, and elegance, promising an unforgettable journey as it evolves.
The restrained, spicy, and broad-ranging nose features a plenitude of spice elements on ripe, fresh, and layered notes of red and dark currant, earth, and a whiff of the sauvage. Once again, there's a caressing yet powerful mouthfeel to the beautifully concentrated and strikingly textured big-bodied flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract on the hugely long, firm, and very much built-to-age finish.
This cuvée draws from 3.4 hectares across two parcels: the Monts Luisants part, with both the oldest (over 80 years old) and youngest vines, providing structural tannins; and the original Clos de la Roche parcel, adding expressive fruit. Fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled wooden vats with native yeasts. The wine then undergoes an élevage (aging process) of typically 18 months in French oak barrels.
Serve at 14-16 °C with a duck breast with cherries, lamb, or a wild boar stew with cognac.
The 2022 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Cuvée Vieilles Vignes is a powerful wine, though comparatively speaking only a middleweight in the context of years such as 2018, 2019 and 2020, and it's more suave and integrated out of the gates than those vintages. Offering up deep aromas of ripe berry fruit mingled with baking spices, rose petals, orange zest and vine smoke, it's full-bodied, layered and velvety, with a fleshy core of fruit, supple tannins and a nicely cohesive finish.
32 barrels made, which is equal to half the red wine cellar! A bright even purple. A slightly nutty note to the otherwise reticent bouquet. Then follows a vast volume of fruit right across the piece, a density which is in a different league to the Chapelle. Absolutely swamps the palate and with the characteristic precision of the vintage. Excellent fresh feel to the finish. I think this is a wine which could explode in volume from here, with so much of the fruit expression currently being held back by the tension. Drink from 2035. Tasted Nov 2023.
Located in the village of Morey-St-Denis, in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, Domaine Ponsot is a legendary winery that controls a significant portion of the prestigious Grand Cru vineyards of this village – Clos de la Roche and Clos St Denis.
Founded in 1872, this winery has remained in the hands of the Ponsot family, passed down from generation to generation. Compared to many other wineries in the region, the best vineyards of Domaine Ponsot are of particularly old origin, giving the wines exceptional depth and complexity. Although the winery does not loudly declare its methods and is not certified, ecological and biodynamic viticulture principles are applied on the estate, emphasizing respect for nature and the expression of terroir.
Wine Style
Domaine Ponsot wines are characterized by a rich and intense bouquet of fruit, exceptional depth, and complexity. They are known as some of the longest-lived wines of the Côte de Nuits, capable of evolving for decades. The winery's philosophy is focused on minimal intervention in the winemaking process, aiming to maximize the expression of each terroir's uniqueness.
Prestigious Vineyards
The distinctiveness of Domaine Ponsot lies in its holdings of prestigious Grand Cru vineyards, which make up as much as 79% of the winery's total production (in comparison, Grand Cru vineyards account for only 1% of all Burgundy vineyards). For this reason, the quantities of these wines are very limited, and they are highly sought after.
Aging and Drinking Period
Domaine Ponsot wines are created for long aging. Their intense fruit concentration, firm structure, and elegant tannins allow the wines to evolve for decades in the bottle, gaining even more complexity and subtlety. Although some young vintage wines can be enjoyed early, their true potential unfolds after longer aging in the cellar. The winery's reputation and limited quantities lead to their high value and demand among wine collectors worldwide.
