Description

Frontonio Microcosmico Garnacha Valdejalón 2024 is one of the most interesting interpretations of modern Aragonese ‘Garnacha’, created by Bodegas Frontonio, a project of winemaker and Master of Wine Fernando Mora. The wine is made from old, organically grown bush vines growing at an altitude of approximately 700 meters in the Valdejalón region, where the slate and clay soils and cooler climate allow for the preservation of freshness and terroir character.

The aromas are dominated by red currants, raspberries, strawberries and cherries, complemented by notes of thyme, rosemary, white pepper and wet stone. In the glass, subtle floral and smoky nuances open up, giving the wine elegance and complexity.

The wine is light, very lively and precise. Fresh acidity, soft tannins and pure red fruit character combine with mineral tension and a long, refreshing finish. This is a delicate and energetic Garnacha, often reminiscent of the elegance of Pinot Noir.

The grapes are hand-picked from vines over 60 years old. Fermentation takes place using indigenous yeasts in concrete tanks, leaving some of the bunches uncrushed, and the wine is then aged for about 7 months in underground concrete tanks.

Serving recommendations

Serve at 14-16 °C. Recommended pairings: grilled pork, duck, lamb, Iberian ham, mushroom dishes, vegetable stews, aged cheeses or Mediterranean cuisine.

Wine Advocate

The red 2024 Microcósmico Garnacha is a clear step up from the Botijo from this same year. It is more serious, with more tension and more elegant and polished tannins, a subtler and more harmonious wine with citrus and floral characteristics. It's still quite primary but has complexity, depth and a mineral feeling, the texture on the palate.

About brand

"Bodegas Frontonio" is a project by Master of Wine (MW) Fernando Morra, born from the desire to reveal the uniqueness of Aragon region wines. "Bodegas Frontonio" is located in the Aragon region, which encompasses appellations such as Valdejalon, Campo de Borja, Calatayud, and Somontano. Many people have barely heard of them, but it is believed that the 'Garnacha' variety (known as 'Grenache' in France) originated from these areas. Therefore, it is not surprising that in these appellations we can find many old 'Garnacha' vines. Fernando Morra initiated the creation of the "Mondo Garnacha" winemakers' group, whose goal is to preserve and nurture old vines, expressing the best qualities of 'Garnacha' wines. In the Valdejalon IGP appellation, the oldest surviving vines were planted in the 1890s! Luis Gutierrez (Robert Parker's Wine Advocate reviewer), reviewing 'Garnacha' wines from Aragon, Navarra, and several other areas around the "Frontonio" winery, wrote simply and unequivocally: "This time, Frontonio wines are the ones that show the most significant progress compared to previous vintages. Each year the wine gets better."

Wine Style

"Bodegas Frontonio" wine is expressive, with exceptional balance, perfectly revealing the terroir of the vineyards.

  • White wine: Characterized by clear minerality, full texture, expressive, pure aroma, and perfectly integrated oak character.
  • Red wine: Aromatic, with polished tannins, juicy, and with a dominant red berry character.

Prestigious Vineyards

The winery owns prestigious vineyards, acquired since the 1890s. Among them stand out:

  • Valdejalon IGP – the oldest surviving vines.
  • Campo de Borja DO – an area famous for old 'Garnacha' vines.
  • Calatayud DO – a region where high-quality 'Garnacha' grapes are grown.
  • Somontano DO – a region where international and local grape varieties are combined.

They are complemented by lesser-known but characteristic vineyards of the Aragon region.

Aging and Consumption Period

"Bodegas Frontonio" wines are aged to highlight the best qualities of the vineyards. The wines are aged in both oak barrels and other vessels, depending on the wine style. For this reason, "Bodegas Frontonio" wines are flexible – they can be enjoyed both young and aged.
