Description

G.D. Vajra Barolo Bricco delle Viole 2022 is one of the most delicate and elegant Barolos of the Vajra family, born in their highest cru vineyard in the village of Barolo. Bricco delle Viole has been considered the benchmark Vajra wine for many years – not for its power, but for its exceptional aromatic detail, clarity and mountain freshness. The 2022 harvest in the Barolo region was extremely hot and dry, but the high altitude of this cru allowed it to preserve tension, acidity and the classic ‘Nebbiolo’ character.

The aroma of the wine is extremely refined and multi-layered: rose petals, violets, blood oranges, wild cherries, dried raspberries, cinnamon, mountain herbs and a subtle mineral note. The producer describes the 2022 vintage as “noble and magnetic”.

The wine has an elegant structure and a very long aftertaste. The tannins are fine, silky yet firm, and the bright acidity gives vitality and long aging potential. There are notes of cherries, rose hips, orange peel, pepper and chalky minerality. This is a Barolo that speaks more about tension, texture and terroir than about massiveness or extraction.

The Bricco delle Viole cru is one of the highest in the Barolo region - the vineyards reach an altitude of about 400-480 meters above sea level. For this reason, a greater amplitude of temperatures between day and night is maintained here, allowing the ‘Nebbiolo’ to maintain aromatic precision and freshness even in warmer years. The soil is dominated by calcareous marl, which gives the wine mineral structure and longevity.

Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks with long maceration, and aging is carried out in large Slavonian oak barrels. The Vajra philosophy is based not on the influence of new oak, but on the maximum transparent transmission of terroir. In 2022, winemakers used gentler extraction and more careful cellar work to maintain balance in a difficult harvest year.

Serving recommendations

Serve at a temperature of 16-18 °C with game roasts, red meat stews with wild mushrooms/truffles, cured ham, and mature cheeses.

About brand

The Vajra family has farmed Bricco delle Viole, the highest cru in Comune di Barolo, since the 1880s. At the young age of fifteen, Aldo Vajra embraced the dream to revive his family legacy. Displaying a vision and commitment belying his young age he took over the estate in 1968, turning a new page.Aldo soon acquired the first organic certification of the region (1971), created private biotype selections (selezioni massali) of Nebbiolo and Dolcetto, pioneered the renaissance of Freisa, a noble yet forgotten local grape (1980) and the cultivation of Rhine Riesling in Piemonte (1985).Today, the Vajra family continues the vineyard research focusing on the influence of soil and climate change. The winery is trail-blazing the rediscovery of Chiaretto di Nebbiolo and the wines of the 17th century – long before Barolo was created - through two limited-production wines: “N.S. della Neve” (a champagne-method rosé nature) and “Claré JC”, a partial whole-cluster fermentation of pure Nebbiolo.High elevation vineyards are a unique factor to the Vajra wines, for their ability to express finesse and remarkable complexity over power
