Pfalz

1–4 of 4

Located in southwestern Germany, the Pfalz wine region is one of the country's largest and sunniest wine-producing areas. Known for its wide range of whites and reds, Pfalz blends rich winemaking traditions with a dynamic and innovative approach. The warm weather allows for the production of remarkably aromatic, excellent dry wines, so sweet wines are made in Pfalz only in exceptional vintages. One of Pfalz's strengths lies in its great geological diversity of soils — a finely crafted Riesling from different vineyards is genuinely distinct, revealing aromas that cannot be replicated elsewhere.

Pfalz territory and geography

The Pfalz region stretches along the eastern edge of the Haardt Mountains, which are a continuation of the French Vosges, and is bordered to the east by the river Rhine. This geographical position shelters the area from harsh weather, giving it a warm, sunny climate that favours viticulture. The region enjoys one of the longest growing seasons in Germany, allowing a wide range of grape varieties to ripen beautifully here.

Soil types in Pfalz are diverse — from sandstone and limestone to loam and clay — each lending its own distinct character to the wine. The combination of favourable climatic conditions and varied soils makes it possible to produce high-quality wines with a unique expression of terroir.

Pfalz wines

Pfalz is the second-largest wine region in Germany, with its vineyards accounting for a significant share of the country's total wine production. The region is particularly renowned for its expressive 'Riesling' (25.2%) wines, but it also produces high-quality wines from other grape varieties, such as 'Grauburgunder' (Pinot Gris) (9%), 'Dornfelder' (10.7%), 'Müller-Thurgau' (6.9%), 'Spätburgunder' (Pinot Noir) (7.2%), as well as 'Portugieser', 'Weissburgunder' (Pinot Blanc), 'Kerner' and 'Chardonnay'.

Riesling from Pfalz displays the flavour of ripe fruits — from citrus and green apples to peaches and apricots — often accompanied by fresh acidity and minerality. The style ranges from dry to sweet, although sweet wines are produced in very small quantities in the region.

Beyond Riesling, Pfalz also produces high-quality wines from other grape varieties — Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris) makes up 9% of all cultivated grapes, yielding wines with flavours of pear, apple and spice. These are usually fresh, well-balanced wines that pair well with food. Dornfelder is characterised by notes of dark berries, cherries and earth.

Müller-Thurgau, which accounts for 6.9% of the region's grapes, produces light, floral, fruity wines. Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) is distinguished by its elegance and aromas of cherry, raspberry and plum, complemented by notes of earth and spice. These wines have a soft tannin structure and a long finish.

The region also grows smaller quantities of Portugieser, Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc), Kerner and Chardonnay, each contributing to the diversity of Pfalz wines. Weißburgunder wines are marked by fresh acidity and subtle fruit flavours, while Chardonnay wines — depending on winemaking practices — can range from fruity and mineral to rich, oak-aged styles with buttery notes.
