The History and Prestige of Chateau Durfort-Vivens

Located in the heart of the Margaux appellation, Chateau Durfort-Vivens has been celebrated for centuries. Ranked as a Second Growth in the famous 1855 Médoc Classification, its reputation was so grand that in 1844, its prices were second only to Chateau Margaux. The estate was even visited and highly rated by Thomas Jefferson before the French Revolution. Since 1937, the Lurton family has been involved with the property, and Gonzague Lurton has successfully overseen the estate since 1992, elevating its quality and sustainable practices to new heights.

Terroir and Biodynamic Winemaking

The 55-hectare (136-acre) vineyard sits on deep gravel soils over a sand and clay base, ideal for cultivating premium grapes. The plantings consist of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, and 6% Cabernet Franc. Demonstrating a deep commitment to the environment, the estate is certified organic (Ecocert, 2015) and biodynamic (Demeter, 2017). The primary wine is fermented in wood and cement vats and aged for an average of 18 months in French oak barrels, with roughly 40% being new oak, ensuring a perfect balance of dark fruit and elegant structure.

Food Pairings and Recommendations

A sophisticated Margaux like this requires equally refined dishes. It pairs wonderfully with roasted meats, such as beef or lamb, as well as hearty game dishes. It is also an excellent companion for mature, hard cheeses. To elevate your tasting experience, browse our selection of wine snacks and gourmet accompaniments.
