Red dry
Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Ovello 2020 is one of the most prestigious single vineyard (MGA) riserva wines from Produttori del Barbaresco, produced only in the best vintages from the historic Ovello vineyard, located in the northern part of the Barbaresco area. Due to the higher altitude and calcareous clay soil, this wine stands out for its elegant structure, refreshing acidity and longevity. The 2020 Piedmont harvest was characterized by excellent phenolic maturity and harmonious balance, so this wine demonstrates both the classic Nebbiolo character and the distinctive Ovello terroir. The bouquet reveals notes of cherry, raspberry and pomegranate, complemented by dried rose petals, violets, licorice, black tea, anise and subtle nuances of forest floor and spices. As the wine ages, hints of tobacco, leather and mineral lime emerge in the glass, adding complexity to the aroma.
The wine is concentrated yet extremely elegant. Bright acidity and precise, fine-grained tannins create a solid structure, complemented by layers of juicy red berries, cherry stones, blood oranges and spices. The aftertaste is long and mineral.
Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks with long maceration, and after malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged for at least 30 months in large 25-50 hl oak barrels.
Serve at 16–18 °C. Recommended pairings: beef or venison steaks, braised veal, tagliatelle with boletus or truffles, mature hard cheeses and other rich dishes of Piedmontese cuisine.
The Ovello vineyard has some northern exposures and generally represents a cooler growing site. You can expect intense fruit flavors and more prominent tannins as a result. The Produttori del Barbaresco 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello fits the bill. Vine growth starts much later and usually lasts longer to produce dark intensity and bold aromas in the wines. In the cold years, the tannins can be aggressive, but in the hot years like 2020, they show better balance. This wine offers ferrous notes of iron and rusty nail followed by cherry-driven sweetness.
Produttori del Barbaresco, founded in 1958, now has 51 members and controls more than 100 hectares of premium Nebbiolo vineyards in Barbaresco. Each family is in full control of its land, growing Nebbiolo grapes with centuries old skill and dedication. The vinery produces a Barbaresco DOCG, a blend of Nebbiolo grapes harvested from different vineyards, and a simpler Nebbiolo Langhe suited for earlier consumption. In great vintages, nine single-vineyard Barbarescos are produced from nine classic premium sites within the Barbaresco village boundaries: Asili, Rabajà, Pora, Montestefano, Ovello, Pajè, Montefico, Muncagota, and Rio Sordo. These are the geographical names of sites where Nebbiolo grapes have always been cultivated. The name of the single-vineyards, the total number of bottles produced, and the name of the owners of the vineyards are marked on the labels. Produttori del Barbaresco, which vinifies only Nebbiolo grapes, produce around 550 000 bottles per year. In a good vintage they are divided among Barbaresco (50%), single vineyard Barbarescos (30%) and Nebbiolo Langhe (20%).
