Kanonkop Pinotage Stellenbosch 2022

57,00

Description

Kanonkop is one of the most respected estates in Stellenbosch, and their Pinotage is considered a benchmark for this South African variety. The 2022 release combines concentrated fruit ripeness, the estate’s characteristic power and elegance, and a modern, finely executed style that shows what this grape can achieve on the best granite and shale slopes of the Simonsberg area.

On the nose, it reveals layers of black plums, blueberries, and ripe black cherries, complemented by subtle spices, tobacco leaf, cocoa, and a gentle smoky note typical of oak ageing.

The palate is rich and full, with firm yet polished tannins. The acidity is medium and well-balanced. The texture is velvety, and the finish long, dominated by dark fruit, cocoa, and a refined smokiness that adds depth and elegance.

The wine originates from vineyards on the lower slopes of Simonsberg, where granite, shale, and loam soils prevail. This combination ensures concentration, structural tannins, and the expressive, dark-fruited character of Pinotage.

The grapes were fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. After fermentation, the wine was aged for 12–15 months in French oak barrels (a portion new), allowing it to gain finesse and aromatic complexity.

Serving recommendations

Serve at 16–18 °C. Pairs well with roasted duck breast, BBQ beef, ribs, or stronger-flavored stews.

About brand

Kanonkop Winery is often referred to as South Africa’s Priemier Grand Cru Classe winery. The family winery, which has been handed down from generation to generation for more than 40 years, owns 100 hectares of vineyards on the slopes of Mount Simonsberg, where more than 50 years old Pinotage vines can be found. Here the productions are some of the best red wines in all of South Africa. Wine production is based on old traditions: most of the vineyards are not artificially irrigated, the wine is fermented in shallow wide concrete tanks and then matured in French oak barrels; and everything is done on the same farm.
