Description

Markowitsch Ried Rosenberg 1ÖTW Carnuntum 2021 is a high-class dry red wine from the Carnuntum region of Austria, produced from the prestigious 1ÖTW (Erste Lage) vineyard Rosenberg. The wine reflects not only the high craftsmanship of Weingut Markowitsch, but also the unique terroir of calcareous, sandy and gravelly soil, which is perfectly suited to noble red grape varieties.

The wine has an intense ruby color and a complex aroma, dominated by black cherries, black currants, spices, smoky and herbal notes. The taste reveals balanced acidity (5.8 g/l), firm but elegant tannins and a long, fruity-spicy aftertaste.

The grapes were hand-picked from late September to early October, in several stages, to ensure optimal ripeness. Fermentation took place spontaneously on the skins for 14–20 days, maintaining a temperature of 30–32°C, using wooden fermentation vessels. After malolactic fermentation, the wine was aged for 20 months in French oak barrels of various sizes.

Acidity: 5.8 g/l

Residual sugar: 0.9 g/l

Serving recommendations

Serve at 16–18 °C with red meat stews/steaks, game, grilled sausages, and mature cheeses.

This innovative winemaker is constantly seeking new ways to unlock the unique nuances of the Carnuntum terroir, actively experimenting with oak barrels of various sizes and from different producers. It is here that some of Austria's most interesting and highly regarded ‘Pinot Noir’ wines are born, often compared to the examples of Burgundy for their subtlety and elegance.

Wine Style

Markowitsch wines are characterized by expressiveness, excellent balance, and elegance. They harmoniously blend fruitiness, minerality, and subtle oak notes, perfectly reflecting the character of the Carnuntum region.

  • White wines, among which ‘Grüner Veltliner’ and ‘Weissburgunder’ (Pinot Blanc) dominate, are fresh, mineral-driven, with vibrant aromas of fruit and herbs.
  • Red wines, especially ‘Pinot Noir’ and ‘Zweigelt’, are elegant, with smooth tannins, juicy aromas of red and dark berries, and subtle spices.

Prestigious Vineyards

Weingut Markowitsch manages vineyards in the best locations of the Carnuntum region, where the soils and microclimate are ideal for growing high-quality grapes:

  • Vineyards situated on slopes with clay, gravel, and limestone soils impart minerality and complexity to the wines.
  • A favorable climate with warm days and cool nights ensures optimal grape ripening and aroma development.

Meticulous work in the vineyard and cellar allows Markowitsch to create wines of exceptional character.

Aging and Drinking Period

Markowitsch wines are crafted for enjoyment both in their youth and after aging in the bottle. Their excellent balance and structure allow the wines to develop successfully over time, gaining even more complexity and subtlety. This is especially true for their top-tier ‘Pinot Noir’ wines, which can age beautifully for many years.
