Founded in 1962 by 82 local growers, Adega Cooperativa de Guimarães was created to collectively receive, vinify, and market grapes produced in the Guimarães area. In 1963, the winery became fully operational in Fermentões, and the cooperative quickly expanded, eventually gathering around 250 growers.
After a period of decline in the 1970s and 1980s, the cooperative entered a new growth cycle in the 1990s, driven by professionalism, investment in modern facilities, and stronger support for growers. In 2000, a brand-new winery was built from the ground up and processed around 400,000 kg of grapes in its first harvest, producing wines with a distinctly regional profile: fresh, light, and fruit-forward.
Since 1999, the cooperative has provided technical assistance aimed at improving vineyard performance and grape quality, including guidance on vineyard renewal and modern agronomic practices. Through collaboration with regional institutions, large-scale vineyard redevelopment helped strengthen Alto Ave as a key source of high-quality grapes for the globally unique style of Vinho Verde.
Wines are produced from traditional local varieties such as Loureiro, Trajadura, Arinto, Vinhão, and Espadeiro. The style is defined by freshness, balance, aromatic purity, and lively acidity. The emblematic “Praça de S. Tiago” wine reflects the cooperative’s identity and collective effort—best enjoyed chilled, in good company, and with moderation.
