Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Montefico 2020 is one of the most tightly structured and aging-potential wines in the Produttori del Barbaresco Riserva series. Montefico cru is located between the municipalities of Barbaresco and Neive, on an amphitheatre-shaped slope, where calcareous soils and a slightly cooler microclimate allow the cultivation of particularly concentrated, mineral and long-lasting ‘Nebbiolo’ grapes. The producer himself describes Montefico as an exceptionally complex, tannic and structured Barbaresco, in which strength is combined with freshness and minerality.
The aroma reveals notes of dried rose petals, cherries, raspberries and wild berries, complemented by nuances of rosemary, lavender, pine resin, tobacco, cedar and licorice. Montefico is characterized by an expressive herbal and balsamic character, which gives the wine exceptional complexity.
The wine is concentrated and extremely precise. Firm, ripe tannins, bright acidity and mineral tension create a powerful structure that will develop for a long time in the bottle. Layers of red fruit, spice, tobacco and chalky minerality lead to a long, energetic and very complex aftertaste.
After fermentation, the wine is aged for 36 months in large oak barrels, followed by additional bottle aging.
Serve at 16-18 °C. Food pairing: braised beef, venison, wild boar ragù, veal osso buco, truffle-flavored pasta, aged Castelmagno or other hard cheeses.
Two standouts from the 2020 vintage are Montefico and Asili. The Produttori del Barbaresco 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Montefico comes from a site that is distant from the warm air that travels through the Tanaro River Valley and is closed within an amphitheater. This is a beautiful vineyard that looks toward the village of Neive and has active limestone soils. The wine is especially compact in texture and has a distinctly herbal note, with dried rosemary and lavender, that gives it a Mediterranean or botanical feel. The palate delivers a brief moment of softness, but otherwise the wine is structured and rich.
Produttori del Barbaresco, founded in 1958, now has 51 members and controls more than 100 hectares of premium Nebbiolo vineyards in Barbaresco. Each family is in full control of its land, growing Nebbiolo grapes with centuries old skill and dedication. The vinery produces a Barbaresco DOCG, a blend of Nebbiolo grapes harvested from different vineyards, and a simpler Nebbiolo Langhe suited for earlier consumption. In great vintages, nine single-vineyard Barbarescos are produced from nine classic premium sites within the Barbaresco village boundaries: Asili, Rabajà, Pora, Montestefano, Ovello, Pajè, Montefico, Muncagota, and Rio Sordo. These are the geographical names of sites where Nebbiolo grapes have always been cultivated. The name of the single-vineyards, the total number of bottles produced, and the name of the owners of the vineyards are marked on the labels. Produttori del Barbaresco, which vinifies only Nebbiolo grapes, produce around 550 000 bottles per year. In a good vintage they are divided among Barbaresco (50%), single vineyard Barbarescos (30%) and Nebbiolo Langhe (20%).
