Côtes du Rhône AOC is one of the largest and most renowned wine appellations in France, stretching along the Rhône River from Vienne in the north to Avignon in the south. It forms the heart of the Rhône Valley, encompassing more than 170 villages and uniting diverse terroirs, climates, and winemaking traditions.
The appellation was officially established in 1937 to guarantee the quality and authenticity of wines produced in both the northern and southern Rhône. While the region is best known for its red wines, it also produces distinctive white and rosé wines that reflect the region’s sunny climate and aromatic richness.
The main grape variety is Grenache, which gives the wines warmth, fruitiness, and richness. It is complemented by Syrah and Mourvèdre, adding structure, tannins, and spicy complexity. This classic blend – the famous “GSM” – has become the signature of the southern Rhône. White wines, dominated by Viognier, Roussanne, and Marsanne, are known for their elegance and delicate floral character.
The climate is typically Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and the influence of the Mistral wind, which cools the vineyards, protects them from disease, and helps preserve natural acidity. Soils are highly diverse – from calcareous clay to stony galets roulés – providing both structure and minerality to the wines.

Aromas often reveal ripe cherries, plums, and blackberries, accented by dried herbs, pepper, and a hint of smoke. On the palate, they are round, balanced, and smooth, with gentle tannins and a long, spicy finish.
Producers also have the opportunity to make higher-tier wines under the Côtes du Rhône Villages AOC, which come from more strictly defined areas and express greater concentration and terroir distinction.
Today, the Côtes du Rhône AOC covers over 30,000 hectares of vineyards and is regarded as one of the best examples of quality-to-value ratios in France.
