Chateau La Croix du Casse Pomerol 2016

Description

A rich and structured Pomerol, distinguished by ripe dark fruit character, freshness and well-integrated tannins. The 2016 vintage is considered one of Bordeaux’s strongest vintages of recent decades, and this wine reflects the classic expression of a 'Merlot'-driven Pomerol from the Right Bank.

The nose reveals blackberry, black cherry and ripe plum, accompanied by floral and spicy notes. On the palate, the wine is rich, concentrated and structured, with ripe, well-integrated tannins, fresh acidity and a long, mineral finish. Notes of vanilla, toast and subtle cedar add complexity.

The Château La Croix du Casse vineyard is located in the southern part of the Pomerol plateau. Its terroir consists of old gravel and sandy layers over a subsoil rich in iron oxides. This iron component is a characteristic geological feature of the area.

The wine is made from 93% 'Merlot' and 7% 'Cabernet Franc'. Fermentation and maceration take place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks and last around four weeks. The wine is then aged for 16–20 months in oak barrels, approximately 50% of which are new.

Serving recommendations

Serve at 16–18 °C with lamb dishes, grilled meat or mature cheeses.

About brand

Château La Croix du Casse is a prestigious Bordeaux wine estate located in the Pomerol appellation, one of the most renowned areas for red Bordeaux wines, celebrated for producing elegant and complex expressions. The estate is situated in the southern part of the Pomerol plateau, in one of the finest terroir zones of the region.

The vineyards of Château La Croix du Casse cover approximately 9.5 hectares. The soils consist of sand, gravel, iron oxide, and clay layers. This soil composition gives the wines a distinctive terroir character, expressive minerality, and a fruit profile typical of the Pomerol appellation.

The vineyards are planted with classic Pomerol grape varieties: around 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, which are ideally suited to the local conditions. Their careful blending allows the creation of rich, elegant, and harmonious wines.

In 2005, the estate was acquired and revitalized by the Castéja (BCAP) family group, well known for its professional management and long-standing involvement with other prestigious Bordeaux estates. The property is managed by an experienced team with extensive expertise in crafting high-quality wines.

Wines from Château La Croix du Casse are typically medium-bodied, with an elegant texture and vibrant fruit intensity. They are enjoyable both in their youth and after several years of ageing. These wines are characteristic of the Pomerol style: soft, round, and refined, with gentle tannins and a pleasantly juicy, lingering finish.

Château La Croix du Casse represents an excellent example of how traditional Bordeaux winemaking methods can be successfully combined with modern viticultural practices to produce wines that are simultaneously elegant, subtle, and full of character.
