Red dry
A Northern Rhône appellation wine, in which Louis Barruol interprets Côte-Rôtie as tradition defines it — powerful yet aristocratic, shaped by the distinctive expression of its steep hillside terroir.
The wine reveals a layered and глубок aromatic profile with notes of black cherry, plum, blackberry, and ripe blueberry. These are complemented by floral tones, rose petals, and wild Provençal herbs, creating the classic contrast between Côte-Rôtie’s floral elegance and dark fruit depth. Further nuances of black pepper, graphite, smoke, and a subtle touch of cocoa unfold with aeration.
On the palate, silky tannins combine with vibrant acidity, creating a precise and refined structure. Flavors are driven by dark berries, spices, and a distinctly mineral, long-lasting finish reminiscent of warm granite and sun-heated stone.
The vines grow on steep schist and granite slopes, which provide natural freshness, structure, and tension. These are among the most demanding vineyard sites in the Rhône Valley, resulting in low yields and exceptional aromatic purity. The northern exposure helps preserve the spice-driven character and mineral precision of ‘Syrah’.
Fermentation is carried out using native yeasts, often with a proportion of whole clusters to enhance spice and complexity. Ageing takes place in used French oak barrels, allowing the wine to retain purity of fruit while developing depth and elegance.
Serve at 16-18°C with duck, wild game, venison dishes, and smoked meats.
Château de Saint Cosme is one of the oldest and most respected wineries in the southern Rhône Valley, located in the Gigondas appellation. The estate’s history dates back to the 16th century, and today it is run by Louis Barruol, representing the 14th generation of the family dedicated to preserving and developing this exceptional domaine.
The winery is renowned for its organic and biodynamic viticulture and for its highly precise work in the cellar. The vineyards grow on limestone, clay, and sandy soils, which give the wines structure, mineral tension, and remarkable ageing potential.
The estate’s flagship grape variety is ‘Grenache’, alongside ‘Syrah’, ‘Mourvèdre’, and ‘Cinsault’. Grapes are harvested by hand, fermentation is carried out with native yeasts, and ageing often takes place in old oak barrels or concrete vats to preserve the purity of the terroir and the authenticity of the wine.
Château de Saint Cosme wines are known for:
expressive yet balanced fruit character
elegant structure
pronounced minerality
excellent ageing potential
The estate is widely regarded as a benchmark of Gigondas, respected both in France and internationally as one of the most authentic expressions of the Southern Rhône.
