Red dry

Domaine Cazes Cotes du Roussillon Villages Ego Rouge 2022

Description

A rich and elegant Roussillon red wine that reveals the generosity of the southern sun and the careful application of biodynamic practices. This wine is crafted from meticulously selected Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre grapes, reflecting a strong terroir character and the subtle spirit of the Roussillon region.

The aroma is expressive and generous, with notes of ripe black and red fruits — blackcurrant, blackberry, cherry, and mulberry — complemented by subtle hints of liquorice, spices, and delicate cocoa. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet elegant, with velvety tannins, perfectly balanced structure, and refreshing acidity. The finish is long, warm, and harmonious, with lingering notes of ripe fruit, spices, and a light Mediterranean touch.

The grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness from clay-limestone soils with pebble inclusions in the Agly Valley. The wine is aged in large oak casks and concrete egg-shaped vessels.

Serving recommendations

Serve at 16–18 °C. This wine is an excellent match for rosemary-roasted lamb, grilled red meats like entrecôte or short ribs, and mature cheeses paired with fig chutney.

About brand

Domaine Cazes – Biodynamic Icon of Roussillon from Rivesaltes

Domaine Cazes is one of the most renowned and historic wineries in the Roussillon region, located in Rivesaltes, between the Pyrenees Mountains and the Mediterranean Sea. The estate was founded in 1895 by Michel Cazes. Today, it is a large, dynamic family-owned domaine run by Emmanuel Cazes and Lionel Lavail.

Since 1997, the winery has been transitioning to organic and biodynamic viticulture, and since 2005 the entire 220 hectares have been certified biodynamic. It was one of the first wineries of this scale to adopt biodynamics in southern France.

Terroir and Vineyards Domaine Cazes owns more than 220 hectares of vineyards in the Agly Valley, at the foothills of the Corbières. The soils are varied — clay-limestone with schist and silica stones. The domaine produces wines across all the major appellations of Roussillon:

  • Côtes du Roussillon and Côtes du Roussillon Villages
  • Maury, Fitou
  • Muscat de Rivesaltes and Rivesaltes (particularly renowned for VDN – vins doux naturels)

Main Grape Varieties: Grenache (all types), Syrah, Mourvèdre, Muscat d’Alexandrie, Muscat à Petits Grains, and others.

Winemaking Style Domaine Cazes is known for elegant, well-balanced wines that clearly express their terroir, with freshness and excellent structure. The winery produces dry red, white and rosé wines, as well as exceptional fortified sweet wines (Rivesaltes Ambré, Grenat, and Muscat de Rivesaltes), which are famous for their remarkable longevity.

Biodynamic practices help highlight pure fruit expression, minerality, and the subtle spice characteristic of the Mediterranean. The wines are appreciated for their perfect balance between power and elegance.

Flagship Wines Among the most notable are the Rivesaltes collection (including old reserves), Ego, Le Credo, and various single-vineyard cuvées from the best terroirs.

Domaine Cazes is a modern, innovative winery that deeply respects tradition — widely regarded as one of the leading producers in the Roussillon region.
