What makes Kartli region wine special?

Unlike the warm Kakheti, the Kartli region features a cooler, continental climate and valleys surrounded by forests and mountains. This allows the grapes to ripen longer and retain their natural, crisp acidity. It is precisely because of this freshness that Kartli is considered the best Georgian region for creating sparkling and elegant still beverages. The main styles include:

  • Elegant Whites and Oranges: From local Chinuri and Goruli Mtsvane varieties, an incredibly fresh white wine smelling of wildflowers and citrus is created here. These varieties are also perfect for making traditional orange wine fermented in clay vessels, which tends to be more subtle and lighter here than in the eastern part of the country.
  • Red Discoveries: The red wine made from the rare Shavkapito grape stands out with plum and herbal aromas and a light body reminiscent of European classics.

Food pairing tips

Due to their freshness and pronounced acidity, Kartli beverages are wonderful companions to traditional Georgian dishes such as khachapuri, pkhali (vegetable and nut pastes), or green salads. Elegant reds will perfectly complement lighter meat snacks and poultry dishes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Atenuri appellation?

This is the most famous Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) in the Kartli region, historically known for exceptional quality sparkling beverages made from a blend of Chinuri and Goruli Mtsvane grapes.

How does Kartli orange wine differ from Kakheti?

In Kakheti, orange beverages are fermented with skins in qvevri vessels for up to 6 months, making them very dark and tannic. Kartli winemakers usually leave only a portion of the skins and for a shorter time, resulting in a much lighter and more elegant beverage.

Are these beverages suitable for a gift?

Absolutely. The rare Kartli grape varieties and subtle flavor profile make excellent gifts for wine enthusiasts wanting to discover a different, more European face of Georgian winemaking.
