Due to harsh conditions, the grape yield is very small but produces berries of exceptional concentration. The region is globally most known for its unique methodology of producing naturally semi-sweet beverages:
Racha-Lechkhumi semi-sweet red beverages are a wonderful companion to spicier Caucasian or Asian cuisine, as they ideally balance sharp spices. They will also perfectly pair with blue cheeses, fruit desserts, and nut-garnished snacks.
Why is Khvanchkara naturally semi-sweet?
Due to the harsh autumn climate, fermentation used to often stop naturally (due to the cold) before the yeast could process all the grape sugar. Today, this process is controlled by modern refrigeration technologies, maintaining natural sweetness without any added sugar.
Are wines from this region rare?
Yes, Racha-Lechkhumi is a very small region, and authentic Khvanchkara is produced in extremely small quantities. Therefore, these are highly sought-after and rare gifts for Georgian wine enthusiasts.
Is orange wine produced in the region?
Although natural orange wine made in qvevri (traditional clay vessels) is much more popular in the Kakheti region, some Racha-Lechkhumi winemakers also apply this millennial technology to create complex beverages from local varieties.
