What makes the Florina (Amyndeon) terroir stand out?

Located in Northwestern Greece, the Florina prefecture (which includes the famous Amyndeon / Amynteo appellation) features high altitudes (around 600–700 m) and a four-lake microclimate. The lakes soften the harsh winters, while cool summer nights allow the grapes to ripen very slowly. A lighter, more elegant style of production prevails here:

  • Cool Xinomavro: Unlike neighboring Naoussa, Florina's red wine from Xinomavro grapes is much softer, less tannic, smelling of strawberries, rose petals, and spices. Its texture often resembles Pinot Noir.
  • High-Class Rosés and Sparklings: Due to high natural acidity, this region is famous for Greece's best sparkling and exceptionally dry, bright rosé wine.
  • Aromatic Whites: The region's coolness is ideal for varieties like Sauvignon Blanc or Assyrtiko, creating a crisp and fresh white wine.

Food pairing

Due to their freshness, Florina beverages are highly versatile. Elegant reds will pair perfectly with poultry, duck, or wild mushroom dishes. White and rosé variants will ideally complement salads, soft cheeses, seafood, and various summery snacks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Amyndeon (Amynteo)?

This is the most important PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) appellation in the Florina region. It is unique in that it is the only Greek PDO that allows the production of not only red but also rosé wine from 100% Xinomavro grapes.

Are Florina region wines suitable for aging?

Yes, despite their more elegant, lighter body, high-quality Florina reds retain an excellent acid structure and can age beautifully in a cellar, making them valuable gifts.

Can natural / orange beverages be found in the assortment?

Yes, many innovative winemakers applying biodynamics work in the region, so you can find very interesting experiments here, including skin-fermented orange wine.
