What characterizes the diversity of Macedonia region wines?

Macedonia covers a large part of Northern Greece (including subregions like Naoussa, Florina, Drama, and Halkidiki). Due to the varied terrain – from coasts to high mountains – both local and international grape varieties are successfully grown here. This allows winemakers to create very diverse styles:

  • Kingdom of Reds: Xinomavro dominates the entire region, but excellent blends of French varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot) are also very popular here. It is a hearty, firm red wine ideally suited for long aging and solid gifts.
  • Aromatic Whites: It was in Macedonia that the Malagousia grape was preserved and revived. A highly fragrant white wine smelling of tropical fruits, jasmine, and citrus is created from it, as well as from Assyrtiko or Sauvignon Blanc.

What to pair wines from this region with?

Due to the huge variety of styles, pairing possibilities are endless. Crisp Malagousia or Assyrtiko beverages pair perfectly with Mediterranean salads, cheeses, and light fish snacks. Meanwhile, structured red blends demand rich barbecue, roast lamb, or beef stews.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the same as the country of North Macedonia?

No, when we talk about the Macedonia wine region (PGI Macedonia), we mean the northern administrative part of Greece, which has millennial winemaking traditions and is famous for unique Greek grape varieties.

What is the Malagousia grape?

It is one of Greece's greatest success stories. The almost extinct variety was saved exactly in the Macedonia region. It yields exceptionally fragrant wines smelling of peaches and mint with a round texture and medium acidity.

Is rosé wine produced in the Macedonia region?

Yes, exceptionally high-quality, often dry and structured rosé wine is produced throughout Northern Greece, which is highly favored both as an aperitif and as a serious companion to food.
