Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino 2021

Description

"Tenuta Il Poggione" is a historic pillar of the Montalcino region. Their "Brunello" is considered an absolute benchmark of traditional Tuscan winemaking. The 2021 vintage in the region is regarded as one of the best of the past decade.

A deep, layered, and exceptionally expressive aromatic bouquet unfolds in the glass, dominated by ripe black and sour cherries, blackberries, and plums. This profound fruitiness is complemented by subtle Mediterranean forest floor, peppermint, licorice, and dark chocolate motifs, intertwined with elegant notes of violets.

The wine is full-bodied, featuring firm, velvety-textured tannins. It is firmly structured, enveloping, and retains excellent acidic freshness, leaving a long, dynamic, and savory mineral finish.

The wine is made from 100% "Sangiovese" grapes. Viticulture at the "Il Poggione" estate is characterized by a late harvest and an extremely strict selection of berries, which in 2021 guaranteed absolutely flawless berry quality. The soil of the estate's vineyards is highly diverse, and this is precisely what creates the perfect balance of the wine. Moisture-retaining clay prevails here, giving the wine power, structure, and weight. In the higher altitudes lie rocks, shale, and local friable limestone (known as galestro).

After a lengthy fermentation with wild yeasts, this wine is aged for 36 months (3 years) in large (30–50 hl) French oak barrels. This traditional style of using large barrels does not overpower the wine with oak spices.

Serving recommendations

This elegant wine is best served at a temperature of 16–18 °C and pairs perfectly with a beef steak, a rich wild boar ragout, and aged Pecorino cheese.

Smoky, sweet spices join tarry plums, black cherries and a touch of blackberries. Fine, dusty tannins run throughout the palate, with compact dark fruit and a long, caressing finish. Rather exuberant and plush but still well balanced. Drink or hold. Saturday, Dec 13, 2025

About brand

Il Poggione is one of the most prestigious wineries in Montalcino (Italy), managed by the Franceschi family for five generations. Located on the southern slopes of Sant'Angelo in Colle, this estate is renowned for its traditional style, highly age-worthy Brunello di Montalcino wines. It is an ideal choice for those seeking an authentic red wine that perfectly reflects the pure character of Sangiovese grapes and the regional terroir, offering an exceptional price-to-quality ratio.

Unique Montalcino Terroir and Historic Vineyards

The vineyards of the Il Poggione estate are located in the southern part of Montalcino, which boasts a unique microclimate. Mediterranean winds and significant day-to-night temperature variations ensure even ripening of the harvest and preserve the natural acidity of the berries. These factors give the wines extraordinary freshness and longevity. The pride of the winery is the Vigna Paganelli vineyard. Planted back in 1964, it is one of the oldest in the entire Montalcino region.

Traditional Winemaking

A father-and-son winemaking duo, Fabrizio and Alessandro Bindocci, works in the estate's cellars, acting as strict custodians of the traditional Brunello production canons. The grapes are harvested exclusively by hand. To maximize color and tannin extraction, a long maceration process is applied with regular pump-overs. Large, neutral French oak barrels are deliberately chosen for aging. This method maintains a very subtle wood influence and allows the Sangiovese grapes and the Sant'Angelo terroir to speak for themselves. In exceptional vintage years, the Riserva wine produced spends at least one additional year in barrels.

Wine Style and Aging Potential

The result in the glass is an intense and full-bodied wine. The multi-layered aromas and taste intertwine notes of dark berries, menthol, sweet smoke, cocoa, and spices, accompanied by the recognizable earthiness characteristic of Montalcino wines. These are beautifully aging wines, valued by collectors for their longevity and highly attractive price ratio in the premium class market.
