Kanonkop Kadette Cape Blend Stellenbosch 2022 – a classic South African red that embodies the spirit of Stellenbosch and the craftsmanship of Kanonkop Estate. Not only is it one of the country’s most recognizable wines, but it also serves as a benchmark for how the Cape Blend style can unite power, elegance, and approachability.
This wine is a blend of ‘Pinotage’, ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’, ‘Merlot’, and ‘Cabernet Franc’, sourced from vineyards planted on the red Hutton and Oakleaf soils that cover the slopes of Simonsberg Mountain. These unique terrains lend the wine its structure, ripe fruit depth, and distinctive spiciness.
In the glass, Kadette Cape Blend 2022 shines a deep ruby red. The bouquet opens with notes of ripe plums, blackcurrants, cherries, licorice, and tobacco, followed by hints of cedarwood, dark chocolate, and roasted spices, adding layers of warmth and complexity.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, harmonious, and juicy, with soft tannins and vibrant acidity. The flavor profile balances ripe red and black fruits with subtle oak spice, while the finish is long, slightly smoky, and marked by a touch of earthy minerality.
Fermentation takes place in open concrete vats, preserving the purity and freshness of the fruit. The wine is then aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, around 20% of which are new, adding finesse and a silky texture.
Founded in the early 20th century, Kanonkop Estate is a cornerstone of South African wine heritage, renowned for its Pinotage and Bordeaux-style blends. The Kadette Cape Blend stands as a bridge between tradition and modern expression – a wine that delights both as an everyday pleasure and a thoughtful companion to fine dining.
Serve at 16-18°C with beef or lamb burgers, beef stew with mushrooms, pizzas, pasta with meat sauce.
Kanonkop Winery is often referred to as South Africa’s Priemier Grand Cru Classe winery. The family winery, which has been handed down from generation to generation for more than 40 years, owns 100 hectares of vineyards on the slopes of Mount Simonsberg, where more than 50 years old Pinotage vines can be found. Here the productions are some of the best red wines in all of South Africa. Wine production is based on old traditions: most of the vineyards are not artificially irrigated, the wine is fermented in shallow wide concrete tanks and then matured in French oak barrels; and everything is done on the same farm.
