Description

Masciarelli Villa Gemma Terre Di Chieti Superiore Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo DOC 2022 - a richer, more serious style of rosé wine from Abruzzo, made from 100% ‘Montepulciano’ grapes. First produced in 1986, this is not a random rosé, but one of the important wines of the Masciarelli house tradition. Its strength is not frivolous fruitiness, but a deeper texture, gastronomic character and the cherry character typical of Abruzzo.

The aroma is dominated by notes of fresh cherries, black cherries and pomegranate, complemented by bright fruitiness and a very clean, intense scent. The overall profile seems not only juicy, but also lively, very accurately maintaining the fruity energy of the cerasuolo style.

The wine is juicy, fresh, but at the same time has more body than most light rosés. It is a rosé that not only has acidity, but also a soft hint of red wine texture.

The character of this wine is shaped by the San Martino sulla Marrucina area in Abruzzo, at an altitude of about 400 m above sea level, with a southwest exposure. The vineyards are dominated by clayey, moderately calcareous soils, and the vines are about 30 years old. This origin helps the ‘Montepulciano’ variety to maintain not only the richness of the fruit, but also sufficient freshness, so the wine avoids heaviness and maintains a clear, precise structure.

A very precise method is used in winemaking: after separation from the stems, the berries are kept with their skins for 12 hours at 4 °C, then fermented at a controlled temperature, and then the wine is aged for 3 months on fine yeast sediments before bottling. It is this short contact with the skins and aging on the lees that helps to achieve the richer color and fuller texture characteristic of the Cerasuolo style, while maintaining a fresh profile.

Serving recommendations

Serve at 10 - 12 °C with tuna tartare, cured ham (prosciutto), grilled shrimp, beef carpaccio.

James Suckling

An excellent Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo here with some tangy fruit, full of raspberries, grapefruit and pomegranate. Some fresh cranberries, too. Smoothly rendered on the medium- to full-bodied palate with silky tannins and a juicy, appetizing finish. Delicious now.

About brand

Gianni Masciarelli Winery – The Elite of Abruzzo Wines

Since 1978, when Gianni Masciarelli took over the family winery in the commune of San Martino sulla Marrucina, it has become one of the leading names in Italian winemaking. The estate’s wines, known for their exceptional quality, have become true symbols of Italian wine culture.

Innovative Winemaking in Abruzzo

Gianni Masciarelli was among the first to introduce modern winemaking techniques to the traditionally underdeveloped Abruzzo region. His work combined respect for local traditions with innovation, cultivating both indigenous and international grape varieties such as Montepulciano, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Leaders of Abruzzo Wine: “Villa Gemma”, “Castello di Semivicoli” and “Marina Cvetic”

“Villa Gemma”, “Castello di Semivicoli”, and “Marina Cvetic” are three flagship wine collections produced by the Masciarelli estate. These wines have received international recognition and consistently rank highly among wine critics and enthusiasts. The iconic “Villa Gemma”, made from Montepulciano grapes, has become one of the most acclaimed and sought-after Italian wines both domestically and internationally.

Marina Cvetic and the Future of Masciarelli Wines

Following the sudden passing of Gianni Masciarelli in 2008, the winery was taken over by his wife, winemaker Marina Cvetic. She continues her husband’s legacy, maintaining the highest standards of quality and craftsmanship. Thanks to her dedication and vision, Masciarelli remains one of Italy’s most respected wineries, producing wines that seamlessly combine tradition with modern winemaking excellence.

If you are looking for authentic wines that unite heritage and innovation, Masciarelli wines are an outstanding choice for any wine collection.
