White dry
This Chardonnay is made from grapes grown in the Edna Valley – a small wine region near the Pacific Ocean. The valley is known for its cool, foggy summers and clay–loam soils. The Varner brothers have crafted a wine whose aromas reveal pineapple, green apple, and citrus notes. The palate is rich, with mandarin and a subtle herbal spice. The finish is surprisingly long and deep.
Serve at 10–12 °C with chicken in cream sauce, grilled halibut, seafood, or fresh salads.
Varner Wine – twin brothers Bob and Jim Varner represent one of California's most compelling winemaking stories. In the 1980s they planted the Spring Ridge Vineyard in Portola Valley, in the Santa Cruz Mountains appellation, and for decades did all the work themselves, both in the vineyard and in the cellar – a rare case of winemakers who are also the farmers of their own vines. Their single-block Chardonnays (Amphitheater, Home, Bee) earned the highest critical acclaim and were compared to the finest white Burgundies.
The Varner style is pure, transparent and terroir-driven: minimal intervention, restrained use of oak and a focus on the character of the site. In 1991 the brothers introduced their second label, Foxglove – wines of outstanding value from the Central Coast (Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo). Foxglove Chardonnay is fermented in steel tanks without malolactic fermentation, making it notably fresh, pure-fruited and mineral. This is honest, masterful California winemaking without any gloss – just quality in the glass.
