G.D. Vajra “Langhe Nebbiolo Claré J.C. 2025 is a very unconventional and historically inspired interpretation of ‘Nebbiolo’, which harks back to the times before the modern Barolo style. The name “Claré” itself refers to the ancient lighter, fresher and brighter ‘Nebbiolo’ style of wine, and “J.C.” is a reference to the “Nebiule” wine mentioned in Thomas Jefferson’s notes and 17th century winemaking texts.
The wine is made from younger ‘Nebbiolo’ vines in the Langhe hills, using part of all the bunches during fermentation. As a result, it acquires a very aromatic, lively and slightly wild character. In the glass, aromas of strawberries, pomegranates, raspberries, rose hips, blood oranges and rose petals are revealed, complemented by white pepper, herbs and a subtle note of spices.
The wine is lighter in structure than the classic Langhe Nebbiolo or Barolo, but retains the characteristic energy and tension of ‘Nebbiolo’. Fresh acidity, very soft tannins and a barely perceptible natural body give it an unusual liveliness. It is a very gastronomic, yet playful wine - more focused on freshness, aromatics and lightness than on concentration or power.
The terroir is based on limestone, clay and sandy soils in the higher areas of the Langhe. The altitude of the vineyards and the cooler climate allow for the preservation of bright acidity and a very clear aromatic profile.
The wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks using natural yeasts and about 20% of the total bunches. The aging takes place in such a way as to maintain freshness and a delicate natural texture, reminiscent of the historic Piedmontese ‘claret’ style wines.
This is one of the most original modern Langhe ‘Nebbiolo’ – a wine that does not try to copy the greatness of Barolo, but deliberately shows another, lighter, livelier and very historical face of ‘Nebbiolo’.
Serve at a temperature of 16 - 18 °C with pasta, rice dishes with meat sauces, roasted veal, risotto with mushrooms.
The Vajra family has farmed Bricco delle Viole, the highest cru in Comune di Barolo, since the 1880s. At the young age of fifteen, Aldo Vajra embraced the dream to revive his family legacy. Displaying a vision and commitment belying his young age he took over the estate in 1968, turning a new page.Aldo soon acquired the first organic certification of the region (1971), created private biotype selections (selezioni massali) of Nebbiolo and Dolcetto, pioneered the renaissance of Freisa, a noble yet forgotten local grape (1980) and the cultivation of Rhine Riesling in Piemonte (1985).Today, the Vajra family continues the vineyard research focusing on the influence of soil and climate change. The winery is trail-blazing the rediscovery of Chiaretto di Nebbiolo and the wines of the 17th century – long before Barolo was created - through two limited-production wines: “N.S. della Neve” (a champagne-method rosé nature) and “Claré JC”, a partial whole-cluster fermentation of pure Nebbiolo.High elevation vineyards are a unique factor to the Vajra wines, for their ability to express finesse and remarkable complexity over power
