The Bekaa Valley

1–5 of 5

The Bekaa Valley is the principal and historically most important wine region of Lebanon, located between the country’s mountain ranges. It is a high-altitude valley, lying at approximately 900–1,100 meters above sea level, where wine is shaped not by Mediterranean warmth but by a continental mountain climate.

The region is characterized by hot, dry days and cool nights, allowing grapes to reach full phenolic ripeness while retaining balance. Rainfall is limited, so vineyards are often cultivated without irrigation, encouraging deep root systems and a clearer expression of place and terroir.

Soils in the Bekaa Valley are predominantly composed of limestone, gravel, and clay, with good natural drainage. This geology provides wines with a firm structural backbone, a dry mineral profile, and notable longevity. The region is particularly well suited to red wines, though white varieties are also grown successfully.

The Bekaa Valley is known for both international grape varieties (such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Cinsault, Grenache, and Chardonnay) and indigenous Lebanese grapes, which are increasingly being brought back into focus. Stylistically, the wines are defined by structure, dry ripeness, and ageing potential, often reflecting a synthesis of Mediterranean and mountain influences.

This is a region where wine is not made for easy consumption—the Bekaa Valley speaks of time, concentration, and a sense of place, continuing a winemaking tradition that spans more than two thousand years.
