Description

Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Montefico DOCG 2021 is one of the most structured and long-lasting wines in the Produttori del Barbaresco Riserva series, coming from the historic Montefico cru vineyard. This vineyard is located in the upper part of the Barbaresco zone, where the calcareous marl soils and cooler microclimate allow the ‘Nebbiolo’ to maintain a special energy, minerality and firm tannin structure. Montefico is often considered one of the strictest and slowest-opening Barbaresco crus, but this is precisely why its wines have exceptional aging potential. In the 2021 harvest, Montefico demonstrated not only its usual strength, but also unusual elegance and vitality.

Notes of cherries, strawberries, dried roses and violets are revealed in the aroma. They are complemented by sage, mint, licorice, cedar, graphite, chalk and subtle balsamic nuances. In the glass, the wine constantly changes, revealing new layers and the characteristic mineral character of Montefico.

The wine is concentrated, with bright acidity, dense tannins and a long mineral aftertaste. There are notes of cherry stones, wild herbs, pepper, mint and crushed stone. The strength of the wine lies in its structure, depth and ability to develop over decades.

The Montefico vineyard is located in a naturally protected amphitheater-shaped area, oriented towards the town of Neive. The limestone soils and cooler exposure give rise to particularly mineral and tightly structured Barbaresco wines. The Produttori del Barbaresco traditionally ferments this cru with long maceration, and the wine is aged for about 36 months in large Slavonian oak barrels and additionally in the bottle before being released on the market.

Serving recommendations

Serve at 16-18 °C. A very strong combination would be beef cheeks with parsnip puree and wild mushrooms or tajarin pasta with brussels sprouts. Slow-braised beef (Brasato al Barbaresco or Barolo), aged beef tenderloin or entrecote, duck breast with cherry or wild berry sauce, veal stews with mushrooms, risotto with wild mushrooms or brussels sprouts, mature cheeses - go well with it.

Spicy and aromatic, this is full of wild herbs and strawberries, licorice and mint. Fully focused on freshness yet restrained, showing balsamic and figs. Full-bodied, silky to velvety on the palate due to superripe tannins, with crisp acidity and a tight yet chiseled structure in the finish. Long and warming. March 2026 release. Drink or hold.

About brand

Produttori del Barbaresco, founded in 1958, now has 51 members and controls more than 100 hectares of premium Nebbiolo vineyards in Barbaresco. Each family is in full control of its land, growing Nebbiolo grapes with centuries old skill and dedication. The vinery produces a Barbaresco DOCG, a blend of Nebbiolo grapes harvested from different vineyards, and a simpler Nebbiolo Langhe suited for earlier consumption. In great vintages, nine single-vineyard Barbarescos are produced from nine classic premium sites within the Barbaresco village boundaries: Asili, Rabajà, Pora, Montestefano, Ovello, Pajè, Montefico, Muncagota, and Rio Sordo. These are the geographical names of sites where Nebbiolo grapes have always been cultivated. The name of the single-vineyards, the total number of bottles produced, and the name of the owners of the vineyards are marked on the labels. Produttori del Barbaresco, which vinifies only Nebbiolo grapes, produce around 550 000 bottles per year. In a good vintage they are divided among Barbaresco (50%), single vineyard Barbarescos (30%) and Nebbiolo Langhe (20%).
