Developed in 1958, the Dunaj grape has only recently become the cornerstone of Slovakia's red wine identity. Its character is defined by its specific place of origin:
South Slovakia: In the country's warmest regions, this grape finds the perfect conditions to reach full phenolic ripeness. Dunaj thrives in sunny growing sites where it accumulates high sugar levels, often resulting in a natural weight and a gentle, almost sweetish finish.
While the variety is exceptionally frost-resistant, it requires a long growing season to ensure its tannins become silky—the defining hallmark of this wine.

This is a genetic trait. One of its parent varieties (Muscat Bouchet) belongs to the teinturier group—grapes that have red flesh and juice in addition to red skins. This gives Dunaj wine its incredible, opaque ruby color.
Compared to the spicier Frankovka Modra (Blaufränkisch) or the more acidic Svätovavrinecké (St. Laurent), Dunaj is significantly softer, features sweeter aromas, and possesses lower acidity, making it widely considered more "accessible" and easy to love.
