This Chardonnay shows ripe citrus and green apple aromas with hazelnut and smoky mineral notes adding further complexity. The palate is medium bodied with an intense and ripe fruit core with a soft creamy texture and crisp acidity. It has depth and weight in the mid-palate and a long lingering finish. Can be enjoyed now but will gain further complexity with ageing for the next 10-15 years.

Born to replace the disappeared Chardonnay from Quebrada Seca (the vineyard died from the drought!), the 2017 Tres Volcanes Chardonnay comes from Malleco, a completely different region in the south of the country. The vineyard belongs to Errázuriz winemaker Francisco "Pancho" Baettig, who planted it in 2013 on clay and volcanic soils in Traiguén, some 650 kilometers south of Santiago. This is a rainy zone, with around 1,000 liters of rain per year, a significant part of which occurs during the summer. The full clusters were pressed, and the must was allowed to have contact with the air in an oxidative way. It fermented in used barriques with indigenous yeasts and matured in oak foudres for some 16 months. This is the first year they made this wine, and they have found a cool-climate Chardonnay, with nicely integrated oak. It has a mellow texture, with clean, focused flavors and a nice compromise between volume and verticality. 13,333 bottles and 180 magnums were filled in July 2018.

Pure, precise and powerful, this features a firm, chalky texture to the fresh-cut apple and ripe citrus flavors. Shiso leaf notes show on the crisp finish. Drink now. 1,100 cases made, 150 cases imported.

About brand

De Martino Winery is a family-owned estate founded in 1934 by Pietro De Martino, an Italian immigrant who established ideal conditions for wine production in the Maipo Valley. The winery consistently invests in organic viticulture and sustainable farming, aiming to reveal the diversity of Chile's regions and the authentic expression of terroir. Their winemakers constantly travel through different Chilean locations, seeking unique plots for the production of individual, exceptional wines, striving to prove that Chile can produce top-quality wines. De Martino was the first to export Carmenere wine to foreign countries in 1996, and currently, their single-vineyard wines consistently receive high ratings from wine critics, enthusiasts, and professionals alike.

Wine Style

De Martino wines are characterized by fresh acidity, fruitiness, and earthy notes, along with a distinctive minerality – qualities that are somewhat less common in New World wines.

  • Carmenere: Intense, with subtle notes of spices, smoke, and earth, which harmoniously blend with soft tannins.
  • Chardonnay and Syrah: Elegant variations where the influence of traditional oak barrels adds extra complexity to the wines.

Prestigious Vineyards

The grapes used for De Martino wines are grown in unique Chilean regions:

  • Isla de Maipo: A region with a Mediterranean climate and distinctive soil that imparts a special character to the wines.
  • Itata: Traditional vineyards where classic methods are employed to reveal the authenticity of the terroir.

Aging and Consumption Period

The wines are aged using both modern and traditional technologies, allowing them to maintain their authenticity and emphasize the local terroir. While most De Martino wines are enjoyable upon release, some variations have the potential for long aging, developing even more complex notes.
